Unit 14B, Alaska

Rugged alpine mountains rising from 200 to 8,200 feet elevation. The Talkeetna Mountains form the core of the unit with glaciated peaks, steep ridgelines, broad river valleys, and braided glacial river systems including the Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers. Lower elevations feature boreal spruce-hardwood forest transitioning to shrub tundra and alpine tundra at higher elevations. The Chulitna-Watana Hills occupy the northern portion of the unit. Terrain is predominantly roadless and wilderness in character.

Primarily fly-in access via floatplane or bush plane — this is the dominant method throughout the unit. Limited road access exists along the southern fringe via the George Parks Highway (AK-3) and Alaska Railroad corridor near Talkeetna. ATVs and packrafting are used within the unit once on the ground. The unit is managed cooperatively by ADF&G Region 2 (Southcentral) and Region 4 offices in Palmer (907-746-6300) and Anchorage (907-267-2257). Most of the unit falls within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Public lands include state land managed by DNR and portions of state game refuges; approximately 95% of the unit is publicly accessible.

Three primary vegetation zones: (1) boreal taiga forest — white and black spruce, paper birch, balsam poplar, and quaking aspen in river bottoms and lower slopes up to approximately 2,500 ft; (2) shrub tundra — dwarf birch, willows, alders, and ericaceous shrubs from roughly 2,500–4,500 ft; (3) alpine tundra and rocky fell-fields above 4,500 ft. Riparian corridors are dense with alder and willow, providing critical moose browse. Wetlands and bogs occur in lower drainages. Glacial river systems dominate valley floors.

Moose estimated at approximately 1,400 animals (2005 survey baseline) with annual movements across unit borders into adjacent Units 13E, 16A, and 14A. Some moose are year-round residents of lower river drainages; higher-elevation animals move seasonally. Dall sheep population estimated at approximately 2,500 animals across the Talkeetna Mountains shared among Units 13A, 13E, 14A, and 14B; sheep are permanent residents of alpine habitat with localized seasonal elevation shifts. A portion of the Nelchina Caribou Herd (estimated 35,000–45,000 animals range-wide) uses the Talkeetna Mountains in summer and early fall, with animals moving through Unit 14B seasonally. Brown and black bear densities are moderate; wolves and wolverines are present year-round.

No subsistence preference areas specifically designated within Unit 14B core hunting zones, though subsistence regulations apply on federal public lands within Alaska statewide. No major nonresident closures specific to this unit beyond standard Alaska-wide requirements. Nonresident hunters for brown/grizzly bear must be accompanied by a licensed guide or a qualified resident relative (second degree of kindred, age 19+). Nonresident Dall sheep hunters must be accompanied by a licensed guide. Starting July 2026, all sheep hunters must complete a state-approved hunter orientation course for general harvest ticket sheep hunts (Aug 10–Sep 10). Nonresident moose hunters must complete a Nonresident Moose Hunter Orientation course prior to hunting and carry proof in the field. Special management areas near Anchorage, Palmer-Wasilla, and JBER (Unit 14C vicinity) have strict method-of-take restrictions; these do not affect the core Unit 14B hunting zones. Susitna Flats State Game Refuge (Unit 14A vicinity) restricts aircraft landings Apr 1–May 15.
