The brown bear (coastal) and grizzly bear (interior) are the same species — Ursus arctos — and the continent's most formidable land predator. Grizzlies in the lower 48 are protected under the Endangered Species Act and cannot be hunted. Brown bears in coastal Alaska are huntable with a guided or resident-only hunt and are among the most impressive big-game trophies in the world. A fully mature boar brown bear may stand 10 feet tall on his hind legs and weigh 1,400 lbs. Hunting them requires skill, nerve, and a guide who has experience with dangerous game.
Habitat
Brown bears occupy an extraordinary diversity of terrain across their North American range, from the dense alder and spruce thickets of Alaska's coastal drainages to the high-elevation whitebark pine forests and subalpine meadows of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Understanding this habitat diversity is fundamental to locating bears at any given time of year, because brown bears are driven almost entirely by caloric need — their entire existence is structured around hyperphagia, the compulsive feeding that must pack on sufficient fat reserves to survive four to six months of winter dormancy.

In the interior and montane environments occupied by grizzlies, habitat quality is measured by the availability of seasonal food sources stacked across the calendar. Population
The total North American brown bear population is estimated between 55,000 and 60,000 animals, with the overwhelming majority — roughly 30,000 to 32,000 — residing in Alaska, making it the most important jurisdiction in the world for brown bear conservation and hunting. British Columbia and Yukon together hold an additional 15,000 to 20,000 animals, and Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula supports populations that draw comparison to Alaska's coastal concentrations. These figures represent a genuine conservation success story in the jurisdictions where habitat has remained intact and harvest has been managed conservatively.
In the Lower 48, the picture is dramatically different. The grizzly bear was extirpated from roughly 98 percent of its historical contiguous United States range by the early twentieth century, reduced from an estimated 50,000 animals to fewer than 1,000 by the 1970s. Recovery efforts under the Endangered Species Act have been genuinely successful in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, where the population has grown from roughly 136 animals in 1975 to over 700 today, and in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem centered on Glacier National Park, where population estimates now exceed 1,000 bears. Diet
True omnivores. Spring: sedge grass, skunk cabbage, carrion (winter-killed ungulates), and digging for roots. Fall (hyperphagia): berries (blueberry, crowberry), roots, salmon, anything calorie-dense before denning. Bears may consume 20,000 calories per day in fall.
Social Behavior

Trophy Judging
- →The single most reliable field indicator of a large boar is shoulder height and overall body mass relative to surrounding terrain. A mature boar stands 3.5 to 4.5 feet at the shoulder and appears blocky and massive even at long distances — the neck is thick and appears almost as wide as the head, the body has a pronounced concave dip between the shoulders and the rump, and the animal walks with a rolling, pigeon-toed gait that communicates mass. Sows with cubs appear comparatively slender, long-legged, and flat-backed.
- →Ear spacing is a critical and frequently cited field judging technique: on a mature boar, the ears appear small relative to the head and are set far apart, often appearing to almost disappear into the skull when the bear is looking directly at you. Subordinate males and sows display avoidance and deference behaviors when a trophy boar is near. A bear that is repeatedly displaced from a fishing site by another bear is likely not the largest animal in the area.
- →For skull scoring purposes, measure the greatest length from the tip of the nose to the back of the skull and the greatest width at the widest point, then add them. Boone & Crockett minimum for grizzly is 23 2/16 inches and for Alaska brown bear is 28 inches. In the field, compare the skull width to the length of the ear — on a record-class bear the skull is dramatically wider than the ear is long. Most guides use a 'palm width' comparison: if the skull appears wider than four hand-widths, you are looking at a very large bear.
- →Coat quality matters enormously for a rug or full-body mount. The prime coat in spring is rich and full but often shows winter damage — rubbing on trees and rocks creates bald patches, particularly on the shoulders and haunches. Fall coats achieved peak color and gloss after summer feeding, but the coastal rut in late summer can cause boars to develop fighting wounds that damage the hide. Evaluate coat condition through your spotting scope before committing — patches larger than a hand spread in visible areas will detract substantially from a mounted trophy.

Field Care & Dressing

Many experienced guides recommend a finisher to the base of the ear on any bear that does not show obvious signs of death. Never approach from directly behind, and always keep your firearm ready until you have confirmed the animal is expired. Accidental 'dead bear' attacks kill hunters every decade in Alaska.
- →Brown bear hide is a primary trophy value, so begin skinning from the belly up the insides of all four legs, keeping the claws attached and the lip lines intact with a full 1 to 1.5 inches of skin beyond the lip margin. The hide on a large boar can weigh 80 to 120 pounds unprepared, and you should salt it immediately and heavily — using a minimum of 25 pounds of non-iodized table salt or canning salt — working the salt into every fold, the face, and between the toes to prevent slippage of the hair.

- →Remove the skull carefully if you intend a European mount or full skull trophy — bears are increasingly judged and scored by skull dimensions rather than hide square footage. Score is determined by adding the greatest length and greatest width of the skull in inches; a 28-inch skull is a record-class animal in any subspecies. Clean the skull by removing all meat and placing it in a mesh bag submerged in running water for several days, or use a commercial maceration or beetle colony service. Do not boil skulls, as this weakens the bone and causes the teeth to loosen.
- →In warm weather — which can mean 50°F or higher even in coastal Alaska during August and September — brown bear meat deteriorates rapidly without aggressive cooling. Quarter the animal immediately, remove the gut pile downwind of camp and of your meat cache, and hang quarters in breathable game bags in the shade with maximum airflow. If you cannot achieve adequate cooling naturally, pack bags with snow if available or prioritize flying meat out on the earliest available charter.
