CWD is not a new disease. It was first identified in Colorado in 1967 in captive mule deer at a research facility in Fort Collins. For decades it stayed regional, moving slowly through Rocky Mountain deer and elk populations. Then in the 1990s and early 2000s, captive deer facilities scattered infected animals across the continent, and the map changed fast. By 2025, CWD had been confirmed in more than 30 U.S. states, four Canadian provinces, and populations in Scandinavia and South Korea. It is the fastest-spreading wildlife disease in North American cervid history, and it is now almost certainly present in units you hunt.
What you do in the field matters. Not because the sky is falling, but because you are the primary data-collection infrastructure state agencies have for tracking this disease, and because the decisions you make at the kill site genuinely affect both your safety and the long-term health of the herds you chase.
What CWD Actually Is
CWD is a prion disease, and that classification puts it in a different category from anything else you have dealt with in the field. Prions are not viruses. They are not bacteria. They are misfolded proteins, specifically a corrupted version of a normally occurring protein found in nervous tissue. There is no DNA involved, which means nothing about the biology of ordinary pathogens applies here.
The misfolded protein causes adjacent normal proteins to also misfold, creating a progressive, 100% fatal neurological cascade. An infected animal typically takes 18 to 24 months to show symptoms, which means a deer you shoot that looks completely healthy may be carrying the disease. Once symptoms appear, the animal becomes emaciated, stumbles, loses fear of humans, drools excessively, and drinks and urinates constantly. Death follows within months. There is no recovery and no treatment.
The durability of prions is the property that makes CWD fundamentally different from other wildlife diseases. Normal cooking temperatures do not inactivate prions. Standard sterilization protocols do not destroy them. Prions can persist in soil for years, possibly decades, after an infected animal dies on that ground. A study published in PLOS ONE showed that plants can absorb prions from contaminated soil and concentrate them in above-ground tissues. The ground itself becomes a reservoir.
Which Animals Are at Risk
CWD infects only cervids, the deer family. In North America, confirmed host species include white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk (wapiti), moose, and caribou/reindeer. Among these, white-tailed deer show the highest prevalence rates, with some Wisconsin and Wyoming counties reporting infection in more than 40% of adult bucks in localized surveillance areas. Elk carry the disease but at substantially lower prevalence rates. Moose are susceptible, and there is ongoing research into whether prevalence in moose populations is being underreported due to lower survey effort.
No other North American wildlife species, including predators that consume infected carcasses, have tested positive for CWD. Cattle have not been found to be susceptible under natural conditions.
The Human Health Question
As of 2025, no confirmed case of CWD transmission to humans has been documented. That is the honest answer to the question everyone wants to ask. But the way public health agencies frame what follows that sentence matters.
CWD belongs to the same family of diseases as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, "mad cow disease") and its human equivalent, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). When BSE emerged in British cattle in the 1980s, the official position was also that there was no evidence of human risk. That turned out to be wrong, and more than 200 people died from vCJD linked to consuming infected beef.
The CDC, the USDA, and the World Health Organization all recommend that hunters avoid consuming meat from animals known to be CWD-positive, and that they follow safe field-dressing practices in CWD-detected zones regardless of test results. That is not alarmism. That is precautionary science being honest about the limits of what is currently known.
Two studies using macaque monkeys, which have prion susceptibility profiles closer to humans than rodents, showed that oral exposure to CWD-infected tissue produced prion disease in the monkeys. Those findings were reported in 2018 and have not been replicated with different results. The current scientific consensus is that the risk is not zero, is probably low, and is worth taking seriously given what is at stake.

How to Hunt Responsibly in a CWD Zone
If you are hunting in a state with confirmed CWD, which now includes most of the West, the following practices reduce your exposure and eliminate the handling most likely to spread the disease if you transport an animal.
The infectious prion load concentrates in lymphoid and nervous tissue. Avoid handling these tissues without gloves and never consume them: brain and skull cavity, eyes, spinal cord and backbone, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes (the white, firm nodules visible throughout the carcass), and any tissue that looks discolored or abnormal.
Wear rubber or latex gloves when field dressing. Wash hands and equipment thoroughly with soap and water before handling any other food. Do not use the same knife on a second animal without disinfecting it with a bleach solution, a 50:50 bleach-water mix applied for at least five minutes.
Bone out the meat in the field when possible. This means removing muscle meat from the bones rather than transporting the whole carcass or halves. Boneless meat from an infected animal is considered low-risk by most state agencies because skeletal muscle carries far lower prion concentrations than the tissues listed above, though it is not zero. Transporting whole carcasses or cut-and-wrapped meat with bone-in into unaffected zones is restricted or prohibited by law in many states.
Carcass Movement and Interstate Transport Rules
Transporting deer parts across state lines is where hunters most commonly violate CWD containment rules, usually without realizing it. The restrictions exist because the disease has been moved by humans far more efficiently than it has spread on its own.
What you can generally take across state lines: boned-out meat with no spine or skull, antlers cleaned with no tissue attached, hides without the head attached, finished taxidermy mounts, and meat processed by a licensed butcher.
What is generally prohibited: whole carcasses or quarters with spine attached, brain or spinal cord material, heads with skull and hide together, skull caps with soft tissue, and urine-based lures (many states now restrict these).
These are general federal guidelines under the interstate transport provisions many states have adopted. Your specific state and destination state may have additional requirements. Check the regulations for every state you will drive through, not just where you hunted and where you are going.

Testing: How It Works and What to Do While You Wait
CWD testing requires lymph node tissue, typically the retropharyngeal lymph nodes located near the jaw or medial retropharyngeal nodes near the base of the skull. Most state agencies accept either a whole head or a lymph node sample pulled by a certified technician at a check station or collection point. Increasingly, states offer self-sampling kits that allow hunters to collect the sample in the field and submit it by mail.
Turnaround time varies by state and laboratory load, typically ranging from one to four weeks during peak season. The practical guidance most agencies offer: if you are going to eat the meat, freeze it while you wait. Do not discard it preemptively. If the test comes back negative, you can consume it with reasonable confidence. If the test comes back positive, discard the meat entirely, including any that was processed.
Contact your state wildlife agency before season to find out where collection points are, whether self-sample kits are available, and what the submission process looks like for your unit. Do this before you leave for your hunt, not while you are standing over a carcass without cell service.
What States Are Doing About It
State management responses fall into a few broad categories, and understanding them helps hunters see where their participation fits.
The most aggressive management strategy is targeted harvest increase: deliberately raising tag quotas or removing bag limits in high-prevalence areas to reduce deer density and slow disease transmission. Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Colorado have all used this approach in specific management units. The logic is sound. CWD spreads primarily through direct contact between animals and through environmental contamination from infected animal secretions. Lower density reduces both.
Several states prohibit the use of natural cervid urine lures in CWD zones, because urine from infected animals can carry prions and artificially concentrate deer in areas where contamination may persist. Synthetic lures are permitted and widely available.
Bait and feed sites are regulated or prohibited in most CWD-affected states. Concentrating deer artificially around a single food source is the most effective way to amplify CWD transmission. If you hunt over bait legally in a state that permits it, understand that you are hunting in an environment that likely has elevated prevalence relative to the surrounding area.
How to Help the Science
Voluntary testing participation is the single most useful thing hunters can do beyond safe field practices. CWD surveillance is severely underfunded in most states relative to the geographic area that needs to be monitored. State agencies rely on hunters to submit samples from units with little or no confirmed presence, both to catch early incursion and to verify that areas currently listed as CWD-free remain so.
If you kill an animal that exhibits any behavioral abnormalities, neurological symptoms, or excessive emaciation, report it to your state wildlife agency immediately. Do not consume the meat. Preserve the carcass if possible until an agency biologist can assess it. A single sick-looking deer that gets reported can trigger surveillance that would not otherwise happen for years in that unit.
What the science needs most is density. More samples from more places. The disease does not respect unit boundaries, and neither does the data gap.

The Bottom Line
CWD is not going away. The states that took it seriously early, reduced deer density in hot spots, restricted carcass movement, and built mandatory testing infrastructure, are the states with the most useful data about what is actually happening on the ground. The states that downplayed it have larger problems now than they would have if they had acted sooner.
Hunters who participate in testing, follow carcass transport rules, and field dress carefully are not just protecting themselves. They are doing the wildlife management work that agency staff cannot do alone across millions of acres of backcountry. That is not a guilt trip. It is an accurate description of how this problem gets managed in a country this size.
Learn the rules for your state before season. Test your animal if you can. Bone out your meat in the field. And take the long view: the herds your kids are going to hunt depend on what happens to CWD management in the next fifteen years, and hunters are the most important part of that story.
