Hunt Area 53, Devils Canyon, Wyoming

Rugged canyon and semi-arid basin terrain ranging from approximately 3,700 feet at river level to 9,800 feet on the upper Sheep Mountain plateau. The Bighorn River carved a canyon with sheer limestone walls rising 1,000–2,500 feet above the water; canyon rims give way to rolling sagebrush uplands and the flanks of the Pryor Mountains (fault-block formation) on the west and north boundary.

Primary vehicle access is US Highway 14A, which forms the southern boundary and passes through Lovell (~25 miles west) connecting to Cody and Greybull. Wyoming Highway 37 (NPS Bighorn Canyon road) branches north off 14A near Lovell and provides paved access to the Devil Canyon Overlook and Horseshoe Bend areas within the NPS unit. USFS Road 11 (Sheep Mountain Road) forms the eastern boundary per the official area description and provides the main route into the interior; road is passable without 4WD in dry conditions but high clearance is beneficial. USFS Road 14 (Devils Canyon Road) branches off Road 11 and forms the northern portion of the southern boundary, looping back to US 14A. Approximately 92% of the unit is public land (BLM, Bighorn National Forest, and NPS/Bighorn Canyon NRA); hunting is permitted in designated portions of Bighorn Canyon NRA — hunters must contact NPS rangers for area-specific rules. Private land near Lovell and along irrigated agricultural corridors near the Bighorn River can limit access corridors. Cell service is spotty throughout the unit.

Three primary vegetation zones: (1) sagebrush-steppe and Great Basin shrubland dominating the semi-arid canyon rims and upland plateaus, annual precipitation 6–10 inches; (2) juniper (Rocky Mountain juniper/Utah juniper) and mountain mahogany woodland on canyon slopes and benches; (3) riparian cottonwood and pine galleries along Porcupine Creek and Bighorn River-Lake shoreline. Irrigated cropland on private parcels near Lovell at the lower end of the unit provides additional forage browse. WGFD and NPS sources report approximately 750 plant species in the broader Bighorn Canyon ecosystem.

Mule deer are the primary big-game target, with bucks concentrating in bachelor groups at higher elevations on Sheep Mountain and canyon rims through early season, then pushing to lower juniper-sagebrush slopes and irrigated edges as cold weather arrives. White-tailed deer occur at lower elevations near the Bighorn River corridor and irrigated private lands; the 2023 harvest report shows 45 WTD licenses sold with 0 harvest in the unit. Elk are present in moderate numbers. Pronghorn inhabit the sagebrush uplands. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep occur in and around Bighorn Canyon — NPS reintroduced a population in 1970 that has stabilized at 150–200 animals; the Devil Canyon Overlook is one of the best viewing locations. Mountain lion (cougar) are present given the rugged canyon habitat. Black bear are documented in the canyon. Pryor Mountain wild horses (managed herd, not huntable) occupy portions of the NPS unit. Golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and red-tailed hawks are common raptors. Rattlesnakes are present throughout. WGFD and its 2025 hunt forecast notes that a majority of mule deer herds within the Cody Region are below population management objectives due to prolonged drought and CWD, with Area 53 specifically receiving a new 3-point-or-better APR for the 2025 season.

General license for Area 53 is OTC (no draw required); nonresident tags are pooled under Region R (areas 41, 46, 47, 50–53) with a combined nonresident quota of 500 licenses — confirmed in WGFD Chapter 6 Section 6. 2.
