Overview
Elk are the second-largest member of the deer family in North America and arguably the most coveted big-game animal in the West. Elk hunting demands physical fitness, familiarity with large, rugged terrain, and the ability to pack heavy loads out of remote country. A mature bull can dress out over 500 lbs, meaning a backcountry kill is a significant logistical undertaking.
Habitat
Elk are among the most habitat-versatile ungulates in North America, occupying a broad spectrum of ecological zones from sea-level rainforests on the Pacific Coast to alpine meadows pushing 11,000 feet in the Rockies. Their core habitat preference centers on the ecotone — the transition zone between forest cover and open feeding areas — where they can exploit thermal shelter and nutritional forage simultaneously.
In summer, elk migrate to high-elevation parks, subalpine meadows, and north-facing slopes where cool temperatures suppress insect pressure and new-growth forbs remain succulent well into August. Preferred summer forage includes sedges (Carex spp.), bluegrasses (Poa spp.), arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata), and a wide array of forbs including clover, lupine, and dandelion. As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, elk begin staging downslope, following the retreat of nutritious forage. During the rut in September and October, bulls seek out park-like openings in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and aspen (Populus tremuloides) drainages where sound carries and cows congregate. Winter range drops to 4,000–6,500 feet in most Rocky Mountain systems, where elk rely on south-facing slopes with wind-scoured bunchgrass (Festuca idahoensis, Pseudoroegneria spicata), bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), and sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) as primary forage. Population
North America's wild elk population currently stands at approximately 1.04 million animals, representing one of conservation's great comeback stories. At European contact, elk numbered an estimated 10 million animals ranging from coast to coast; by 1900, market hunting and habitat loss had reduced the species to fewer than 100,000 individuals clustered in remote mountain strongholds. Modern management has restored elk to 23 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces, with transplant programs ongoing in several additional states.
The largest elk populations exist in the Rocky Mountain West: Colorado hosts approximately 280,000–300,000 animals, Oregon around 120,000, Montana 150,000, Wyoming 110,000, and Idaho 100,000–120,000. Washington, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona each support populations in the 60,000–80,000 range. These numbers represent a system under genuine management pressure: chronic wasting disease (CWD) has now been detected in elk herds across 29 states and continues expanding its geographic footprint. Colorado's Front Range herds in particular have experienced measurable population declines in CWD-positive zones, with some management units seeing bull-to-cow ratios decline as adult bulls disproportionately succumb to the disease.
Climate change presents a layered threat to elk populations. Drought years reduce summer forage quality and timing, pushing elk into conflict with agricultural operations at higher frequency. Warmer winters reduce snowpack that historically concentrated elk on traditional winter ranges, complicating management and funding models built around predictable winter range access. Conservation

Subspecies

The validity of Manitoba/Eastern elk as a distinct subspecies versus a synonym of Rocky Mountain elk remains debated among taxonomists. Most reintroduced eastern populations are technically Rocky Mountain elk transplants rather than true nannodes subspecies. Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania offer limited permit hunting opportunities.
Diet
Grazers and browsers. Prefer grasses, sedges, and forbs in summer. Switch to browse (willows, aspen, conifers) and grasses through fall and winter. Bull elk consume enormous quantities in summer to build reserves for the rut, during which they may fast almost entirely.
Social Behavior
Elk are highly gregarious. Cow-calf groups and young bulls form large herds that may number hundreds of animals on winter range. Mature bulls are more solitary through summer, forming loose bachelor groups. Herding instinct means elk are often found in groups — spotting one usually means more are close.
Breeding & Rut
The rut begins in September when bulls begin bugling to challenge rivals and round up harems of cows. Stalking Tips
- →Move fast between bugle sequences — elk can cover ground quickly. Close the distance while the bull is bugling and his hearing is masked.
- →In timber, get within 60–80 yards before setting up to call. Elk that hang up at 150+ yards rarely close the final distance on their own.

A typical mature 6x6 Rocky Mountain bull carries brow, bez (second), trez (third), G4, G5, and main beam tip on each side. Bulls showing asymmetry — a broken point, palmation, or extra non-typical points — can still score extremely well and often indicate a truly old animal whose antlers have developed abnormally through age.
- →Judge antler mass (beam circumference) by comparing beam diameter to the animal's eye, which measures approximately 1.75–2 inches in diameter on a mature elk. A bull whose main beams appear clearly thicker than his eyes at the base is carrying exceptional mass. Mass is the single most underestimated scoring element in the field — it contributes up to 40–50 inches to a bull's Boone and Crockett score across four circumference measurements per antler.

A bull whose antlers extend outside the width of his body at shoulder height has reached the threshold for impressive spread — mature Rocky Mountain bulls typically measure 44–52 inches inside spread, while Roosevelt bulls in the 350+ class often run narrower due to their heavier, more compact antler architecture.
- →Age the bull by body characteristics as much as antler score. A truly mature bull (5.5+ years) will show a swollen, muscular neck that blends into the shoulders during the rut, appearing nearly as thick as the chest cavity. Younger bulls (3.5–4.5 years) retain a distinct neck-to-shoulder junction. A mature bull's belly will appear slightly swollen or rounded, while 2.5-year-old bulls look almost racehorse lean. The face of an old bull often shows a Roman-nosed, blocky profile compared to the dished faces of younger animals.
- →Evaluate brow tines specifically — they are often overlooked but contribute significantly to score. A brow tine measuring 14–18 inches (from burr to tip) on each side adds 28–36 inches to total score. In the field, compare brow tine length to the distance from burr to eye: a brow tine that spans more than twice that distance is above average. Some massive bulls with extraordinary brow tines will score into record books despite only moderate main beam length.
- →Factor in lighting conditions and emotional state during evaluation. The adrenaline response during a close encounter causes genuine perceptual distortion — bulls appear larger than they are under excitement. Train yourself to deliberately slow down, use your binocular to isolate specific features (count tines methodically, note mass comparison to eye), and if possible, let the bull move out of sight before making a final shoot or don't-shoot decision during your first season on a new unit.

Field Care & Dressing
- →Roll the carcass onto its back and begin the field dressing cut with a sharp, short-bladed knife — a 3.5-inch drop-point in a quality steel like CPM-154 or S30V holds an edge through the work ahead. Make a shallow skin-only incision from sternum to pelvis, avoiding puncturing the paunch. Use two fingers of your free hand to tent the skin ahead of the blade, and cut between your fingers to protect internal organs.
- →In warm weather (above 50°F), prioritize evisceration speed over everything else. A bull elk's body cavity retains enormous heat — core body temperature runs 101–104°F — and that thermal mass can hold meat temperatures above 60°F for 90 minutes or more if you don't act fast. Remove all viscera within 20 minutes of a kill and get the carcass propped open with a stick to allow airflow.
- →Remove the hide as quickly as terrain and logistics allow. The hide is the primary insulating layer holding heat in the carcass — once it's off, surface temperature drops dramatically. In backcountry situations where you're packing out quarters, skin each rear quarter before removing it from the carcass, starting from the hoof and working toward the pelvis. This keeps dirt and hair off the meat during the most difficult handling.
- →Quarter elk using the gutless method when the terrain prevents rolling the animal: start with the top rear quarter, removing the entire leg at the ball-and-socket hip joint. Work to the backstrap on that side (the longest, most valuable muscle mass, running parallel to the spine from shoulder to pelvis), then remove the top front quarter and neck meat. Roll the carcass and repeat. This approach allows one person to break down a 700-pound animal without equipment.
