Hunt Area 5, Inyan Kara, Wyoming

Rolling to rugged foothill terrain in the Black Hills transition zone, with ponderosa-pine-covered ridges, creek drainages, badland-style prairie breaks, and open grassland benches; elevation ranges from roughly 4,268 feet on the lower prairie to 6,368 feet at the summit of Inyan Kara Mountain, a prominent igneous laccolith that is the area's dominant topographic feature.

Primary highway access via I-90 along the north boundary (exits at Sundance and Moorcroft), US-16 along the south boundary between Upton and Moorcroft, WY-585 on the east, and WY-116 on the interior. County roads form the remaining boundaries: Skull Creek Road (Weston CR 14), Green Mountain Road (Weston CR 11), and Dry Creek Road (Weston CR 13). Public land is fragmented: approximately 30% of the area is public (roughly 19% Black Hills National Forest, 8% Wyoming state lands, 3% BLM), but much of this public ground is landlocked behind private ranch gates. The USFS Bearlodge Ranger District (Sundance office, 307-283-1361) manages the forest parcels and can advise on legal access corridors. Cook Lake, Reuter, and Sundance Horse Camp are the three Forest Service campgrounds in the district. Inyan Kara Mountain itself is on USFS land but is ringed by private property, requiring contact with the Bearlodge Ranger District for access guidance. Cell service is described as spotty throughout the area. Hunters targeting the roughly 70% private land must secure landowner permission or pay trespass fees; no public walk-in access program is universally advertised for this area.

Ponderosa pine forest covers the higher ridges and slopes; creek and draw bottoms support riparian shrubs and cottonwood; lower ground grades into mixed-grass prairie, sagebrush-steppe, and rangeland; cultivated crop fields (dryland wheat and hay) occur on private land near Upton and Moorcroft. The Black Hills ponderosa pine ecosystem is a fire-climax forest type that provides thermal and security cover for white-tailed deer, while mule deer favor the shorter-grass prairie breaks and rugged drainages on the western and southern margins of the area.

White-tailed deer are the predominant deer species and are found in ponderosa pine forests, creek bottoms, and crop-field edges. Mule deer are present but less common than whitetails, occupying shorter-grass prairie breaks, sagebrush draws, and rugged ravines on the area's western margins. Rocky Mountain elk inhabit the Black Hills National Forest parcels and are huntable under separate WGFD elk area designations. Merriam's wild turkey have an established population in the Black Hills ponderosa pine habitat throughout Crook County, confirmed by the USFS Bearlodge Ranger District. Pronghorn occur on the open grassland and rangeland portions, particularly toward the Upton and Moorcroft lowlands. Mountain lion are present statewide and are periodically taken under WGFD's quota system. Black bear presence in the Wyoming Black Hills is documented at low densities. The Crook County portion of the Black Hills holds some of Wyoming's highest-scoring Boone and Crockett trophy records.
