Hunt Area 150, Wilson, Wyoming

Rugged, heavily forested mountain unit in Teton County straddling the western slope of the Snake River Range and the east face of the Caribou-Targhee/Bridger-Teton divide. Elevation spans 6,200 ft on the Snake River valley floor near Wilson to 10,900 ft along the national forest ridge. Lower elevations feature riparian cottonwood and willow along the Snake River corridor; mid-slopes carry mixed conifer (lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir); upper terrain transitions to steep avalanche chutes, talus, and subalpine meadows near timberline (~9,000 ft). The unit is essentially a narrow wedge between US-191/WY-22 and the national forest boundary, with the majority of valley-floor and bench land in private ranch ownership.

CWD CONFIRMED: First CWD detection in Hunt Area 150 announced November 20, 2025 (not November 21) — an adult male white-tailed deer. Unit is now adjacent to CWD-positive Areas 152 (since 2019) and 155 (since 2022). Hunters are encouraged to submit samples for free CWD testing. Elk hunters MUST obtain an Elk Special Management Permit (available at WGFD offices and license agents) in addition to their elk license — this is mandatory for all elk hunting in Elk Hunt Area 78 (same geographic area as Deer Hunt Area 150). Deer general license hunters are restricted to antlered mule deer of 4 points or more on either antler (or any white-tailed deer) during the rifle season. National Elk Refuge (Area 77) is adjacent but requires a separate NER Permit to hunt. Type 3 and Type 8 white-tailed deer licenses are pooled across six areas (148, 150, 151, 152, 155, 156) with a combined quota — not exclusive to Area 150. The valley-floor private land around Wilson is predominantly restricted; permission required for Type 1 early-season elk off national forest. High recreational use of Teton Pass and WY-22 corridor creates significant human pressure during archery season.
