Hunt Area 148, Teton, Wyoming

684 sq mi of high-elevation Teton Wilderness in Bridger-Teton National Forest, Teton and Fremont counties. Elevation range 6,825–10,533 ft. Terrain dominated by designated wilderness with rock outcrops, boulder fields, canyon-bottom creeks (Buffalo Fork drainage), subalpine meadows, and conifer forest. Getting above treeline is difficult given the heavily timbered slopes; mature bucks concentrate at higher elevations. Northern boundary adjoins Yellowstone National Park; western boundary abuts Grand Teton National Park and John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway. Many animals summer inside the parks and migrate south into the unit in fall.

Primary trailheads off US Hwy 26-287: Turpin Meadows Trailhead (~10 miles from highway on Buffalo Valley Road/FR 30050 near Moran), Angles Trailhead (~9 miles from Blackrock Ranger Station off FR 30040 near Togwotee Pass), and Pacific Creek Trailhead (northern access, ~20 min drive from Moran). No maintained trail infrastructure in large portions of the unit; horse/mule stock strongly recommended for deep-wilderness access and game retrieval. Nearest services: Moran Junction (small community with limited services); full services in Jackson (~30 miles south). No hospitals, hotels, or grocery stores within 20 miles of the unit interior. 1. NONRESIDENT WILDERNESS REQUIREMENT: Nonresidents hunting within federally designated wilderness (the bulk of Area 148) must be accompanied by a licensed Wyoming outfitter or a qualified Wyoming resident with a non-commercial guide license (free from WGFD office).
2. CWD — MANDATORY SAMPLING: Per the 2024 WGFD CWD Monitoring and Surveillance flyer, Deer Hunt Area 148 is listed as a MANDATORY CWD sample submission area. Hunters harvesting deer in Area 148 are required to submit a CWD sample.
3. NONRESIDENT REGION DUAL-LISTING: In the 2026 draft Chapter 6 nonresident General deer quota table, Area 148 appears in both Region F (with areas 105/106/110-115, quota 550) and Region L (with areas 92/94/128/156/157/160/171, quota 200). In the finalized 2023 regulations Area 148 is in Region L only (quota 225). The 2026 draft dual-listing likely reflects a boundary transition or administrative change; hunters must confirm applicable region with WGFD before purchasing a nonresident General deer license.
4. GRIZZLY BEARS: Active grizzly bear population in the unit; bear spray strongly recommended.
5. PRONGHORN: No pronghorn hunt area covers the Teton Wilderness — terrain is unsuitable and no pronghorn season is established for Area 148.
6. MOOSE, BIGHORN SHEEP, MOUNTAIN GOAT: These species are present in the Bridger-Teton but are managed under separate limited-entry trophy game licenses tied to different unit designations; not part of Hunt Area 148 deer/elk management.
7. ELK SPECIAL MANAGEMENT PERMIT required for Elk Area 71 (same landscape); available at WGFD regional offices and license agents. Per Chapter 7 Section 7, Elk Special Management Permit is required for Elk Hunt Areas 70, 71, 75, 77, 78, 80-98.
