About this unit
Sign in to contributeHunt Area 144 (Greys River) covers the Greys River watershed in Lincoln County, WY — steep, heavily forested terrain from 5,647 ft at Alpine to 10,770 ft on the Wyoming and Salt River Range divides. Nearly all land (99.8%) is public Bridger-Teton National Forest. The unit supports strong mule deer and elk populations across two elk hunt areas (EA 89 Lower Greys, EA 90 Upper Greys), plus limited-draw moose and bear opportunities. The Greys River WHMA (3,041.6 acres) near Alpine provides additional public hunting access. CWD was confirmed in the unit in 2021. Nonresident deer hunters must draw within the Region G quota of 250 (shared with areas 135, 143–145).
Steep, heavily forested ridges and canyon drainages of the Greys River watershed. Elevation ranges from approximately 5,647 ft at the river bottom near Alpine to 10,770 ft on the Wyoming and Salt River Range divides. Dominant vegetation is conifer-aspen mix with shrub understory on west-facing slopes; subalpine meadows and talus fields near the high divides. The unit is bounded on the north and west by the Snake River near Alpine, WY (Lincoln County). Most hunting pressure occurs on high-elevation benches and ridges above 8,000 ft before deer migrate to winter range.
Primary vehicle access via the Greys River Road (Lincoln County Road 1000/USFS Road 10138), which parallels the Greys River for roughly 50 miles from Alpine (U.S. Highway 89) south to the head of the drainage near Fontenelle. Numerous USFS two-tracks and trailheads branch off this corridor. The road is generally suitable for high-clearance vehicles; sections can be impassable in early season mud or after heavy snow. Nearest towns: Alpine, WY (north end, full services) and Afton, WY (southwest via US-89). Jackson, WY (Teton County) is approximately 40 miles north. No trailhead permits required; the Greys River WHMA (3,041.6 acres) near Alpine provides an additional publicly accessible block with designated parking.

CWD confirmed in Hunt Area 144 in 2021 from a mule deer buck near Deadman Creek; area borders other CWD-positive units. Hunters taking deer are encouraged to submit samples for CWD testing; carcass transport restrictions may apply. The Greys River WHMA is closed to all entry December 1 through May 1; no shed antler collection Jan 1 – May 1. Elk hunting in the Greys River WHMA requires a special permit. White-tailed deer are present but uncommon (14 general-license hunters active in 2024, 2 harvested). Grizzly bears are present in the broader Jackson-Greys River ecosystem; hunters must be aware of food storage regulations and bait site grizzly reporting requirements. Motor vehicles are restricted to white-arrow-marked roads within the Greys River WHMA. The nonresident deer Region G quota of 250 applies across areas 135, 143, 144, and 145 combined.
