Hunt Area 143, South Piney, Wyoming

South Piney drainage in southwestern Wyoming straddling Lincoln and Sublette counties. Elevation ranges from approximately 6,550 ft along the Green River corridor up to 10,820 ft on the divide between the Green and Greys River drainages. The western half is rugged high-country terrain — timbered ridges, basins, and alpine openings on the Wyoming Range and Salt River Range foothills — while the eastern half drops into lower sagebrush benches and river-bottom habitat along the Green River. Vegetation transitions from riparian cottonwood and willow along LaBarge Creek and the Green River through aspen groves and mountain shrub to lodgepole pine, spruce-fir timber, and timberline parks at elevation. Limited internal road access; remote backcountry areas require foot or horse travel on maintained USFS trails.

CWD ZONE (CONFIRMED): Hunt Area 143 is a CWD-positive area. CWD was first confirmed in HA 143 (east of Big Piney) in the 2022 surveillance effort — a buck mule deer found dead in emaciated condition in late January 2022 (WGFD 2022 CWD Surveillance Report). HA 143 is bordered by previously-positive areas 144, 138 (new in 2021) and 142 (positive 2020). Hunters are strongly encouraged to submit CWD samples from harvested deer; verify mandatory vs. voluntary status in the current year's brochure. Carcass transport restrictions may apply — check WGFD carcass disposal rules. ANTLER POINT RESTRICTION: Mule deer General license limitation is 4 points or more on either antler (or any white-tailed deer). SEASON DATES NOTE: The 2026 draft deer regulations (CH 6 Draft 03.16.2026.4, media/33522) extend the Area 143 General deer rifle season close from Sep 25 (prior regs) to Oct 4.
