Hunt Area 142, Piney-Horse Creek, Wyoming

Elevations range from approximately 6,900 ft in the Green River and Piney Creek valley bottoms to over 10,000–11,100 ft on the Bridger-Teton National Forest alpine ridges. Lower elevations feature sagebrush flats and sage-covered meadows mixed with cottonwood and willow creek corridors. Mid-elevations transition to aspen and Douglas fir; upper elevations are steep, rugged conifer forest approaching timberline around 9,500 ft. Major drainages include Horse Creek, Piney Creek, Middle Piney Creek, South Horse Creek, and Maki Creek.

CWD has been detected in the broader Sublette County area, including in deer hunt areas in the vicinity of HA 142. Specific year of first detection in HA 142 (reported as 2020 by some sources) could not be confirmed from official WGFD documents reviewed. Hunters harvesting deer in CWD-positive or CWD-focus areas must comply with Wyoming carcass transportation regulations — spinal column and head must be left at the kill site or disposed of at an approved facility. Mandatory CWD sampling may apply; verify current WGFD CWD focus area designations before the season. Certified weed-free hay is required on Bridger-Teton National Forest lands.
