Wyoming Hunt Area 118 is a critical disambiguation case: WGFD uses this number for two geographically distinct units across species — Deer HA 118 (Upper Gooseberry Creek, Park County, south of Meeteetse, rugged BLM canyons within grizzly bear range) and Elk HA 118 (Shamrock Hills, Sweetwater/Carbon County near Rawlins, flat Red Desert sagebrush plains). These units are approximately 250 miles apart. All licenses are limited quota requiring draw. Elk HA 118 holds 71% success rate (2022, herd unit EL643 Shamrock). No antelope HA 118 exists. No nonresident general elk license is available for this unit.

Terrain & elevation

Wyoming uses hunt area number 118 for two geographically distinct units across species. DEER HA 118 (Upper Gooseberry Creek, Park County): rugged BLM canyons and sagebrush draws draining Gooseberry Creek and Little Buffalo Creek west of WY Hwy 120, south of Meeteetse; elevation 5,500–10,500 ft; mix of BLM breaks, ponderosa pine draws, and USFS timber in the southwest corner; grizzly bear habitat. Approximately 202 sq mi. ELK HA 118 (Shamrock Hills, Sweetwater/Carbon County): high desert plains between Rawlins and Wamsutter, flat to gently rolling sagebrush grassland with scattered ridges and draws; elevation approximately 6,800–7,200 ft (unverified from primary source — approximate); Chain Lakes Wildlife Habitat Management Area (62,386.6 acres) provides the most rugged terrain in the unit; wild horse populations compete with elk for forage.

Notes

CRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION: Wyoming WGFD uses hunt area number 118 for two geographically separate units across species. Deer HA 118 (Upper Gooseberry Creek) is in Park County south of Meeteetse in northwest Wyoming — rugged mountain canyon terrain adjacent to Absaroka Range foothills and within occupied grizzly bear territory. Elk HA 118 (Shamrock Hills) is in Sweetwater/Carbon County in south-central Wyoming near Rawlins — flat Red Desert high-plains terrain spanning both counties. These are entirely different geographic locations roughly 250 miles apart. Hunters must confirm the correct unit on WGFD license applications. No antelope hunt area numbered 118 exists in Wyoming Chapter 5 regulations. CWD: Both Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 regulation drafts reference a supplemental CWD regulations document; hunters should check current CWD zone maps before hunting either unit. All licenses are limited quota requiring draw application through WGFD; no general over-the-counter deer or elk option exists for HA 118. Nonresident general elk licenses are NOT available for elk HA 118 — Elk HA 118 does not appear in any of the three nonresident general elk license regions listed in Chapter 7 Section 6. Type 8 deer quota of 50 is a combined quota for Hunt Areas 118 and 119 together.
