Hunt Area 114, Wall Mountain, Wyoming

High-elevation Absaroka Mountain country in the South Fork Shoshone River drainage, Park County, Wyoming. The unit encompasses all drainages above Fall Creek (west side of the South Fork) and above Needle Creek (east side), extending into the Washakie Wilderness and adjacent Shoshone National Forest. Elevations range from roughly 6,600 ft at lower canyon floors to well above 12,000 ft on ridgelines and peaks including Wall Mountain (11,476 ft). Terrain is characterized by deep, narrow volcanic canyon walls, steplike cliff-and-butte formations, forested lower slopes transitioning to open alpine and barren sub-alpine above treeline. Approximately half the wilderness is forested; the remainder is rough, sparse, high-elevation terrain. Grizzly bears and wolves are present.

1. REGULATORY STATUS: Season dates are from Ch. 6 and Ch. 7 Draft 03.16.2026.4 (Commission-adopted April 2026). As of July 2026, final Governor-signed regulations had not yet been publicly posted; verify final dates at wgfd.wyo.gov before hunting. 2. PRONGHORN: Pronghorn antelope are not a huntable species in deer Hunt Area 114 (Wall Mountain). This is high-elevation mountain terrain above pronghorn range. 'Antelope Area 114' (Nowater) is a completely separate administrative unit in the Bighorn Basin with no geographic overlap. 3. CWD: The Shoshone River mule deer herd (which includes deer areas 110–114) carries the second-highest CWD prevalence in Wyoming at 47.6% (5-year average 2020–2024), per the 2024 WGFD CWD Surveillance Report. WGFD requests hunters bring all adult (2+ yr) mule deer bucks to check stations for mandatory CWD sampling. Deer area 114 is presumed endemic. Elk Area 59 was not listed as CWD-endemic as of end-2024; elk area 62 (Cody region) had its first CWD positive in 2025. 4. POPULATION STATUS: The Upper Shoshone mule deer herd (areas 110–114) is well below population management objectives. WGFD has reduced harvest opportunity (shortened seasons, limited quotas) to support recovery. Prolonged drought and high CWD prevalence are primary drivers. The 2025 hunt forecast noted 'majority of mule deer herds within the Cody Region are currently below population management objectives.' 5. ELK AREA NUMBERING: Elk hunt area numbers differ from deer hunt area numbers. Deer Area 114 (Wall Mountain) corresponds geographically to Elk Area 59 (Boulder Basin), which covers all of the south and east drainage of the South Fork of the Shoshone River west of Belknap Creek, and all of the north and west drainage of the South Fork above Ishawooa Creek. Note that Elk Area 59 extends beyond deer area 114 and also overlaps portions of deer areas 112 and 113. The elk harvest stats cited are for Elk Area 59. 6. ACCESS: The majority of the unit requires horse or foot access. Grizzly bear country — bear spray and proper food storage are required. No motorized vehicles within Washakie Wilderness. Outfitter-guided hunts are common for the upper wilderness areas.
