Wyoming Hunt Area 100 (Steamboat Elk) covers ~3,700 sq mi of open high-desert sagebrush, deep canyons, and volcanic ridgelines in Sweetwater and Fremont Counties north of I-80. Elk Area 100 is a special management herd with conservative license quotas; the Type 1 any-elk draw requires 19 NR preference points (64.71% odds). Note: Wyoming uses "100" for three separate geographic areas across species — Elk Area 100 (Steamboat, Sweetwater/Fremont Co.), Deer Area 100 (South Wamsutter, Sweetwater Co. south of I-80), and Pronghorn Area 100 (Bear River Divide, Lincoln Co.). This profile primarily covers Elk Area 100 with supplementary deer and pronghorn data.

Terrain & elevation

Open high-desert sagebrush flats, deep canyons, and volcanic/sandstone ridgelines. Elevation ranges 6,300-7,900 ft. No significant timber; juniper draws provide the primary cover. Key landmarks include Steamboat Mountain, White Mountain, Cedar and Pine Canyons, Oregon Buttes, and the Killpecker Sand Dunes. The unit covers approximately 3,564-3,738 square miles in Sweetwater and Fremont Counties, north of Interstate 80. Terrain is mostly gentle with isolated rough canyon sections.

Access & public land

Interstate 80 forms the southern boundary, with Wamsutter and Rock Springs serving as primary access towns. Wyoming Highway 372 defines the western boundary; US Highway 28 runs along the northern edge. A network of BLM two-track and county roads provides vehicle access throughout. Four-wheel drive with chains and a shovel is strongly recommended during rifle season, which often sees early snow. No designated wilderness within the unit. The BLM Rock Springs Field Office is the primary land management contact.

Notes

CRITICAL — Wyoming uses the number 100 for DIFFERENT geographic areas depending on species: Elk Area 100 (Steamboat) is in Sweetwater and Fremont Counties north of I-80 (~3,700 sq mi); Deer Area 100 (South Wamsutter) is in Sweetwater County south of I-80 near the Colorado border; Pronghorn Area 100 (Bear River Divide) is in Lincoln County near the Utah border. These are three entirely separate geographic areas. This profile primarily covers Elk Area 100 (Steamboat) — the unit most commonly referenced under this number — with supplementary data for Deer Area 100 (South Wamsutter) and Pronghorn Area 100 (Bear River Divide). | Elk Area 100 (Steamboat) is a special management herd where WGFD applies conservative license numbers to maintain quality; annual quotas are driven by bull-to-cow ratios and herd counts. | Type 1 elk draw is very competitive — 19 NR preference points required to draw in 2025 (64.71% odds at 19 pts; 0% odds with fewer than 19 pts; 959 applicants at that tier per 2025 NR demand report). | No USFS land exists in this unit. BLM constitutes nearly all public land (~70%), plus ~3% state land. | Elk Area 100 does NOT appear in any WGFD Nonresident Region General elk license list, confirming all elk licenses are draw-required limited quota. | The Elk Special Management Permit (feedground program) applies to areas 70-98 only — Area 100 is NOT included. | CWD is present broadly in Wyoming; check wgfd.wyo.gov for current CWD sampling requirements before hunting. | Mule deer hunting within the Steamboat elk area (Sweetwater/Fremont region) is covered primarily under Deer Area 131 (Steamboat deer unit), NOT Deer Area 100. Deer Area 100 South Wamsutter is a separate, smaller unit south of I-80 in Sweetwater County and does not span into Carbon County. | Walk-In Area 3 (Sweetwater Co., 20,641 acres, year-round access) covers Elk Hunt Area 100, Deer Hunt Area 131, and Pronghorn Hunt Area 96. | Walk-In Area 22 (Fremont Co., 1,731 acres, access Aug. 15 - Dec. 31) covers Elk Hunt Area 100. | Nearest meat processors: Rock Springs, Green River.
