Black bears use the same regenerating clearcut habitats as deer and elk — huckleberry, blackberry, and forbs are primary summer/fall food. Road-hunting the Green Diamond network early morning and glassing cut edges is the primary tactic. Bears are most visible in August and September before hunting pressure builds. No bait or dogs allowed statewide. Glassing south-facing slopes from elevated road cuts is effective.

Incidental opportunity while hunting other species. Mountain lion are present in the unit but targeted pursuit is uncommon.

Secure the Green Diamond access permit before season — it is the single most important planning step. Identify current and 1–3 year-old clearcut blocks using updated satellite imagery; elk bed in adjacent timber and feed in cuts morning and evening. Three-point minimum applies in general firearm season — learn to judge points in dense coastal vegetation. Calling (cow calls, bugling) is effective during the September archery rut. Elk Area 6061 (Twin Satsop Farms) allows antlerless elk during archery season for meat hunters.

Work Green Diamond logging road networks to locate fresh clearcut edges at dawn and dusk. Scout recently logged units 1–5 years old where blackberry, fireweed, and vine maple concentrate deer. During the October rut, rattling and calling are effective. Spot-and-stalk from elevated road berms overlooking cut edges is the most common approach. Late archery through December covers the tail end of the rut with any-deer tags allowing antlerless harvest.
