GMU 578 - West Klickitat, Washington

Elevation ranges from roughly 400 ft along the Columbia River and Klickitat River valley bottoms to approximately 4,800 ft on ridges near the Monte Cristo Range along the western boundary. The landscape transitions from riparian canyon bottoms along the Klickitat River on the eastern boundary through broken mixed-conifer forest mid-slopes to open ridgetop grasslands and dryland agricultural benches. The northern reaches border the Yakama Nation Reservation (Tract D) and become increasingly open with pine-oak woodland and steppe character. The Trout Lake community sits near the northwest corner at roughly 1,950 ft elevation beneath Mount Adams (12,276 ft), with Gifford Pinchot National Forest influence felt in the northwestern corner.

Approximately 16–28% of the unit is public, with public parcels consisting primarily of Washington State DNR blocks, small BLM parcels, and the Klickitat Wildlife Area (approx. 27,800 acres spanning multiple units, with the West Klickitat portion providing riparian access along the Klickitat River). Large private timberland blocks in the north—historically managed by Manulife/Hancock Forest Management, Green Diamond/TCT Columbia Holdings, and American Forest Management—are open to non-motorized hunting access but closed to motorized vehicles. The Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge in the northwest corner is closed to elk and deer hunting. No significant Gifford Pinchot NF acreage falls within GMU 578 proper (the NF boundary lies mostly in adjacent GMU 574 Wind River and GMU 572 Siouxon). A Discover Pass is required on DNR lands. The Yakama Nation Reservation Tract D in the north is closed to non-tribal hunting.

Mixed Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine forest on north-facing slopes; open grassland and sage-steppe on south-facing aspects and eastern benches; riparian cottonwood and alder corridors along the Klickitat River; pine-oak woodland transitioning to pure oak in the drier eastern reaches; dryland grain agriculture and hay fields on private benches providing edge habitat. Timber company lands in the north feature managed second-growth conifer providing dense thermal cover and browse. The ecotone between forest and open agriculture concentrates deer and elk movement.

Elk use the timbered north slopes and private timber company lands for summer and early fall range, pushing onto agricultural benches and river-bottom areas during rut in October–November. Black-tailed deer follow a similar altitudinal pattern: high ridges in summer, mid-elevation forest and edge in fall, and river canyon bottoms for winter thermal cover. The Klickitat River corridor is a primary travel lane for both species. Rut for elk begins as early as the first week of September and runs approximately a month; deer rut begins late October and extends through late December.

Land ownership is extremely fragmented—GPS or compass navigation is essential at all times. Know property boundaries before shooting, especially in ranchette and summer-home corridors. Cattle may be present on working ranches through the early fall hunting seasons. The Simcoe Mountains Wildlife Area Unit (10,944 acres) lies in adjacent GMU 382 East Klickitat, not GMU 578. Draw pressure for the three antlerless elk special permit hunts is moderate: Hunt 2236 (rifle, Nov 7–18, 5 permits) drew 369 applicants averaging 8 points; Hunt 2293 (muzzleloader, Nov 25–Dec 8, 25 permits) drew 251 applicants averaging 7 points; Hunt 2427 (youth rifle, Nov 7–18, 10 permits) drew 62 applicants averaging 3 points. Washington uses a random draw with preference points on most special permits. All general-season elk are branch-antlered (3-point minimum) except during archery early season when antlerless elk may also be taken.
