GMU 334 - Ellensburg, Washington

Kittitas Valley floor at 1,800–2,200 ft elevation dominated by irrigated agriculture (hay, row crops) and dryland wheat benchlands. The Yakima River corridor runs through the center. Surrounding ridges transition from bunchgrass/shrub-steppe (sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bitterbrush) to scattered ponderosa pine on northern faces. Terrain is open and rolling with limited topographic relief inside the unit; steeper canyon terrain exists on the periphery bordering GMUs 335, 340, and 342. The unit sits at the rain shadow of the eastern Cascades, receiving 8–12 inches annual precipitation.

Public land is extremely limited — approximately 2% of the unit. The 48,553-acre L.T. Murray Wildlife Area (WDFW), located ~15 miles west of Ellensburg, overlaps the western edge of GMU 334 and is shared with GMUs 340 and 336. Additional minor parcels of WA DNR and BLM Spokane District lands exist. The majority of the unit is privately held by agricultural operators. Road access within public portions follows the WDFW/DNR Green Dot system; green-dot maps available at the WDFW Yakima regional office and Washington DNR south-east regional office (713 Bowers Rd, Ellensburg). Yakama Nation ceded territory (1855 Treaty) overlaps portions of the broader region; non-tribal hunters should confirm unit-specific tribal jurisdiction. The Yakima Training Center (~327,000 acres) lies adjacent to the south and east but does not overlap GMU 334.

Lower elevations: sagebrush-steppe with big sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, and Sandberg bluegrass interspersed with irrigated alfalfa and dryland grain fields. Riparian corridors along the Yakima River support willow, cottonwood, and native shrubs that provide crucial thermal cover. Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir appear on north-facing slopes at the unit's western edge near L.T. Murray Wildlife Area. The shrub-steppe is considered fringe habitat for black bear; bear hunting opportunity in GMU 334 historically produces zero harvest (2023: 35 hunters, 0 bears). Deer and elk prefer the agricultural edges and shrub-steppe transition zones. District 8 GMUs 334/335 hold mule deer, mule-black-tailed hybrids, and occasional black-tailed deer due to the mix of shrub-steppe and Cascade-influenced habitat.

Elk and mule deer are primarily seasonal visitors to GMU 334, migrating down from adjacent higher-elevation units (335 Teanaway, 340 Manastash) during winter to feed on agricultural crops and haystacks. This pattern is the source of significant human-wildlife conflict. Elk Area 3911 covers all of GMU 334 and the lower portions of GMU 335, and the unit is managed for minimal elk numbers. During hunting seasons, animals quickly shift pressure toward private haystacks and the agricultural core, making public-land hunting difficult. Deer are similarly transient, with resident populations thin on the ground; best hunting opportunity aligns with early archery before season pressure builds.

GMU 334 is one of the most access-limited units in District 8 — hunting without prior connections to private agricultural landowners is extremely difficult. The unit's elk are actively managed to minimize crop damage through Elk Area 3911, which authorizes Master Hunters to harvest antlerless elk via modern firearm Aug. 1 through Jan. 20; archery hunters (no Master Hunter credential required) may take antlerless elk Sep. 7–19 as the only general-season elk opportunity. Archery hunters in GMU 334 must wear hunter orange or pink because of overlap with the Master Hunters modern firearm season in Elk Area 3911. Deer hunting stands out: 2023 data show GMU 334 has one of the highest mule deer hunter success rates in District 8 — archery 34.8%, muzzleloader 52%, multiple weapons 38.4%, modern firearm 9.4% — for hunters who can secure access. Black bear: 2023 district biologist data show 0 bears harvested in GMU 334 (35 hunters, 155 hunter-days); bear habitat is fringe shrub-steppe and the unit does not hold significant bear populations. Cougar are present throughout the region but hunting opportunity is tag-based statewide. Elk hoof disease (Treponeme-associated hoof disease/TAHD) has been documented in District 8; hunters should report lame or limping elk to WDFW. No Elk Area 3911-specific draw data for limited special permits found; special bull quality hunts in the region include the Observatory unit (Hunts 2020, 2059, 2083) near GMU 334. Green Dot road system governs motorized access on public portions.
