Valley Mtns, Utah

Low-elevation desert mountain range; elevations range from roughly 5,000 feet in the surrounding valleys to 6,682 feet at Bald Knoll (Sevier County), the confirmed highpoint per USGS/Wikipedia. GoHunt lists the hunt unit elevation range as 5,000–7,500 ft, which may include adjacent terrain. The range is 28 miles long north-south and widest (~9 miles) at its center, narrowing toward both ends. Two parallel ridgelines merge southward, enclosing the internal Japanese Valley drainage running north-south through the center. Terrain is rolling to moderately steep, with no dramatic cliffs; the range lacks the high-alpine character of neighboring Pahvant or Manti ranges.

Access from the west via I-15 at Scipio and UT-50, which transits the western foothills south from Scipio through Round Valley. UT-28 provides northeastern access near Fayette (between Gunnison and Scipio along the Sevier River corridor). US-89 parallels the southeastern edge through Axtell, Redmond, and Salina. Lone Cedar Road (graded dirt) runs through the eastern Sanpete-county side and provides interior access to BLM tracts; grazing allotments (Lone Cedar, Hayes Canyon, Swedes Canyon) are active. Interior roads are typically two-track dirt suitable for high-clearance 4WD. Private land blocks are present — particularly on the range's flanks — and hunters must navigate around them; GoHunt/OnX mapping is recommended. Old Yuba Dam Road accesses the very northern terminus near Yuba (Sevier Bridge) Reservoir. No designated wilderness areas are present. BLM Fillmore Field Office manages the Juab/Millard side; BLM Richfield Field Office manages the Sanpete side.

The dominant cover type is pinyon-juniper woodland, which has encroached extensively into historically productive mountain sagebrush steppe, reducing forage and cover quality. Active BLM habitat treatments (chaining and aerial seeding) on both the Lone Cedar and Watts Mountain drainages aim to reestablish perennial grasses (target 25% frequency), forbs (10% frequency), and shrubs (20% frequency) in degraded P-J stands. The Lone Cedar Chaining Phase II project (WRI #5710, 1,955 acres, Sanpete County, BLM Richfield FO, implemented Oct–Dec 2021) is a documented example. Mountain sagebrush communities persist at mid-elevations. Riparian corridors are limited but present along drainages feeding the Sevier River system. The area receives roughly 13–16 inches of annual precipitation.

Mule deer use the Valley Mountains year-round, with the area serving as crucial winter range; populations are managed within the broader Central Mountains deer herd unit. Rocky Mountain elk are present, though at lower densities than neighboring Pahvant or Manti ranges; the unit was added to Utah's any-bull general elk hunt in 2023 (grouped with Central Mtns and Moroni Hills per UDWR/GoHunt announcement). Wild turkey (Merriam's) occupy mixed P-J and sagebrush zones. Mountain lion is present and huntable year-round in Utah with a valid hunting license only — no additional permit required (Utah Admin. Rule R657-10). Black bear is present and requires a limited-entry draw permit. Rattlesnakes are noted as prevalent in summer. Pinyon jays nest in the P-J woodland. The range borders no NPS lands and has no established bighorn sheep or pronghorn herds documented within its boundaries.
