South Wasatch Front Extended Archery Area, Utah

Elevation ranges from approximately 4,600 feet on the urban valley floor near Provo to 9,500 feet along the major ridgelines and peaks. The terrain rises abruptly from the heavily developed Utah Valley floor, with large dominant ridgelines leading to prominent peaks and numerous creek drainages cutting deeply through the range. Relief is steep and rugged throughout the public-land portion. The Lone Peak Wilderness (29,500 acres, managed by the Salt Lake and Pleasant Grove Ranger Districts of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest) occupies the north portion of the boundary, with trails rated moderate to severe and elevations from 5,500 to over 11,000 feet.

Primary highway access is via I-15 along the western boundary. US-189 (Provo Canyon Road) penetrates the unit along the Provo River, connecting to Sundance and the Alpine Loop. UT-92 provides access through American Fork Canyon on the northern end. Rock Canyon trailhead (Provo) and Hobble Creek Canyon Road (Springville) are major entry points. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest (Salt Lake and Pleasant Grove Ranger Districts) manages most public land. The Lone Peak Wilderness is within the boundary and restricts motorized access. Private land parcels are common in the lower canyon mouths and foothills adjacent to Provo, Springville, and American Fork; hunters should verify land ownership before accessing. No CWMUs are documented within this specific boundary. Recreational pressure from hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners is high throughout the season.

Lower foothills carry dense stands of Gambel oak and bigtooth maple mixed with sagebrush and grass. Above roughly 6,000 feet, vegetation transitions through patches of Douglas fir and aspen on north-facing slopes, with subalpine fir and limber pine at higher elevations. Riparian corridors follow Rock Canyon, Provo Canyon (Provo River), Hobble Creek Canyon, and American Fork Canyon. The urban fringe along I-15 is largely developed with minimal natural vegetation.

Mule deer are the primary big game species, occupying higher elevations through early season and moving to lower oak-brush and maple slopes as temperatures drop into fall. Rocky Mountain elk are present throughout the unit and concentrate in the middle-elevation aspen and Douglas fir drainages; the Provo Canyon and Hobble Creek drainages are noted elk corridors. Black bears inhabit the forested slopes (Wasatch Mtns West-Central bear unit covers the area). Mountain lions are present across the unit, following deer and elk. Mountain goats occupy the high crags of the Lone Peak and Mount Timpanogos areas but are managed under a separate limited-entry draw and are not targeted within the EAA framework. Moose are occasionally observed in the willows and riparian corridors near Cascade Springs and the Alpine Loop. Raptors including golden eagles are common.

1. This boundary is designated solely as an EXTENDED ARCHERY AREA for deer (either sex, hunters choice). It is NOT a limited-entry unit with its own draw quota for deer — any holder of a general-season archery buck deer permit may hunt here after their archery season, provided they complete the annual UDWR Archery Ethics Course (wildlife.utah.gov/extendedarchery). Beginning in 2026, hunters may also apply for the new statewide draw permit DB0008 (Deer Extended Archery Only), valid on all extended archery areas. No unit-specific quota for DB0008 was published in available sources. Antlerless archery permits are NOT eligible for the extended archery season per UDWR. 2. Harvest statistics for this specific EAA boundary are not published separately. The 2024 UDWR annual report groups extended archery harvest by management unit. The underlying deer management unit for the south Wasatch / Provo area is unit 16A (Nebo), which reported 86 total deer harvested by 316 hunters at a 27.2% success rate for extended archery in 2024. This figure encompasses more geography than the South Wasatch Front EAA boundary alone and should be treated as directional only. 3. The South Wasatch extended archery EAA does NOT include elk extended archery — the elk EAA is labeled 'Wasatch Front' and runs Aug 16–Dec 15. Elk can be hunted in the underlying elk management unit during regular archery and rifle seasons, but the extended archery elk framework does not apply here. 4.
