San Juan, Elk Ridge, Utah

Elk Ridge is a high forested mesa running roughly north-south at approximately 8,500–9,200 ft elevation, accessed via the spine road (FR-088). The mesa drops precipitously into Dark Canyon Wilderness (Dark Canyon descends from ~8,800 ft to ~3,700 ft through sandstone and limestone layers). The broader boundary includes rugged canyon systems — Cedar Mesa escarpments, side drainages, and the Colorado River corridor — as well as moderate foothills and valley floors at lower elevations (~4,900 ft). Terrain on the mesa tops is moderate; the canyon country below is extremely rugged.

Primary vehicle access runs north-south along the Elk Ridge spine road (FR-088), reached from the south via SR-95 (junction with SR-275 west of Blanding) and exiting the north end at SR-211 (Needles corridor). FR-088 is a single-lane dirt road at nearly 9,000 ft; impassable when wet. Additional BLM dirt roads provide access to lower-elevation canyons and desert portions of the boundary. The Dark Canyon Wilderness (45,000 acres, USFS) and BLM Dark Canyon Primitive Area (~62,000 acres) on the west side of Elk Ridge are trailhead-accessed and roadless — pack-in hunts are feasible here. Some private-land blocks exist within the boundary, and Native American trust lands within the boundary are explicitly excluded from the hunt area (per the official UDWR boundary description). No CWMUs are listed within this specific boundary. Nearest services are in Monticello (east, ~25 mi) and Blanding (southeast). Elk Ridge mesa top supports mixed conifer (ponderosa pine, white fir, spruce) and aspen groves. Oak brush (Gambel oak) is common on mid-elevation slopes. Pinyon-juniper woodland covers much of the 6,000–7,500 ft elevation band across lower flanks. At lower desert elevations, sagebrush, desert shrub, yucca, prickly pear cactus, and wild grasses dominate. Riparian corridors follow canyon bottoms.

Mule deer inhabit the unit across all elevations; during archery and muzzleloader seasons deer concentrate at higher forested elevations on the mesa, then move to lower oak-brush zones as seasons progress. The 2025 population estimate of approximately 1,100 is well below the UDWR objective of 2,000, reflecting a decline from historical highs. Bull elk (San Juan Bull Elk limited entry unit) are present primarily in the Manti-La Sal National Forest and BLM lands on and around the mesa; the San Juan elk herd is managed at a population objective of 1,300 animals and is at objective. The unit is managed for high bull age class (objective 6.5–7.0 years); the 3-year average harvested bull age is 7.9 years, one of the highest in the state. Black bear inhabit the forested mesa and canyon country. Merriam's turkey are present in ponderosa pine habitats on the mesa. Mountain lion are present throughout the unit. Coyote, pronghorn in lower desert zones, and various small game round out the wildlife community.
