North Slope, Summit/West Daggett, Utah

Rugged mountain terrain running along the north slope of the Uinta Range with elevation from approximately 6,200 feet in the lower foothills and Flaming Gorge Reservoir corridor up to 12,000+ feet at high alpine ridges; Kings Peak (13,528 ft) lies nearby in the wilderness. Steep canyon walls, glacial cirques, talus slopes, and broad alpine basins characterize the high country, while the lower portions include dissected sagebrush-grassland foothills and canyon rims above Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

Primary access highways are US-191 (runs along the southern boundary near Manila), UT-44 (Flaming Gorge-Manila corridor), and UT-150 (Mirror Lake Highway, western boundary, closed in winter, typically opening near Memorial Day). Secondary access includes Hickerson Road and Sols Canyon Road off the UT-43/UT-44 corridor. A network of Forest Service dirt and gravel roads fans out from these highways; 4WD recommended in wet conditions. The High Uintas Wilderness occupies a large portion of the high country — no motorized vehicles permitted inside its boundaries. Major wilderness trailheads accessible from the north slope include Highline, Henry's Fork, Chepeta Lake, and Grandview. Private land inholdings are scattered on winter range at lower elevations, particularly in the West Daggett subunit around Clay Basin and Bear Top Mountain areas.

Lower-elevation winter range is dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush and mountain big sagebrush with mountain mahogany, bitterbrush, curl-leaf mahogany, and serviceberry as key browse species; cheatgrass encroachment is an ongoing management concern. Mid-elevations transition through pinyon-juniper woodlands and aspen stands (common 8,000-9,500 ft). Upper subalpine zones support lodgepole pine, Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, and blue spruce. Above treeline, alpine tundra grades into barren rocky ridges with grasses, forbs, and low shrubs in glacial meadows. Riparian corridors along Burnt Fork, Sheep Creek, and Henry's Fork provide willows and wetland vegetation.

The boundary supports elk, mule deer, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Shiras moose, pronghorn, black bear, and mountain lion. Elk (Summit subunit ~750, West Daggett subunit ~1,200 per UDWR 2023 management plan) migrate between high-elevation summer range in the wilderness basins and lower sagebrush winter range, often crossing into Wyoming during hard winters. Mule deer winter herd target is 10,000 animals across the full herd unit; CWD has been documented on the unit. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (reintroduced beginning 1983) occupy steep canyon terrain in the Sheep Creek, Carter Creek, and Red Canyon subpopulations of West Daggett, and the Henry's Fork-Gilbert Peak area in Summit; population estimated at 150-200 animals unit-wide. Shiras moose concentrate in thick timber, open meadows, and creek bottoms; unit produces bulls averaging 40-45 inch spreads. Pronghorn are present on the northern foothills of the Summit subunit and the West Daggett/Three Corners northern range. Black bears are present throughout forested mid-elevations. Mountain lions range across the unit year-round.
