North Slope, Summit, Utah

Rugged mountain terrain rising from valley floors near Flaming Gorge Reservoir (~6,200 ft) through forested ridgelines to high alpine wilderness peaks exceeding 12,000 ft. The north-facing slopes form a series of ridges descending north toward the Wyoming border, with numerous glacially carved lakes, cirques, and drainages including the East Fork of the Blacks Fork River and tributaries of the Green River. The subunit is roughly 605 square miles. Wildlife Management Unit 8 boundary runs from SR-150 at the Summit-Duchesne county line north to the Utah-Wyoming state line, east to Three Corners, south to the Green River, west along Flaming Gorge Reservoir to Cart Creek, south to US-191, then west along the Uinta mountain summit back to SR-150.

Primary vehicle access enters from the west via SR-150 (Mirror Lake Scenic Byway), which runs 42 miles from Kamas, UT north to Evanston, WY and is typically open June through early October; the highway provides trailhead access into the western edge of the unit. From the north and east, SR-44 out of Manila provides access to the Flaming Gorge Ranger District; from SR-44, USFS Road 221 (North Slope Road / USFS 058) traverses east-west along the northern base of the unit. Key trailheads include Spirit Lake (10,170 ft), China Meadows area, and East Fork of Blacks Fork trailheads. Deep Creek and Browne Lake campgrounds provide dispersed staging. The High Uintas Wilderness covers the southern tier of the unit above roughly the Blacks Fork headwaters and is roadless and closed to motorized vehicles; pack-in by foot or horse is required for interior access. National Forest outside the Wilderness allows OHV use on designated roads. Private land and CWMU parcels are present but limited; the unit is approximately 90% public land. The Flaming Gorge Reservoir shoreline (BLM/NPS) provides additional northern boundary access.

Lower elevations (6,200-8,000 ft) support ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and mixed conifer with sagebrush openings; mid-elevations (8,000-10,500 ft) include lodgepole pine, aspen groves, and spruce-fir with meadow openings; upper elevations (above timberline, 10,500-12,700+ ft) consist of alpine tundra, rocky talus, and krummholz within the High Uintas Wilderness. Riparian corridors follow Blacks Fork and other streams. Elk favor aspen parks and meadow-edge habitats; moose concentrate in riparian willow and aspen at mid to lower elevations.

Mule deer are distributed throughout the unit; the herd (Unit 8 North Slope) has been recovering from severe 2022-23 winter mortality and is well below the 10,000-animal management objective, with buck-to-doe ratios approximately 21:100. Rocky Mountain elk (general-season spike bull and any bull) inhabit the unit year-round, dispersed across most elevations; the China Meadows area and aspen-heavy drainages are known focal points. Elk tend toward low density with no concentrated migration corridors. Shiras moose occupy riparian and aspen corridors at mid-elevations; the North Slope Summit moose unit is considered one of Utah's better bull moose opportunities with high hunter success. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are present in the Sheep Creek canyon area of the Flaming Gorge Ranger District. Mountain goats occupy the High Uintas Wilderness alpine terrain (managed under the High Uintas Central, East, West, and Leidy Peak hunt units GO6805-GO6808 which overlap this area). Black bears and mountain lions are present throughout the forested portions. Pronghorn occupy lower-elevation sagebrush areas on the northern fringe of the unit boundary.
