Nebo/San Pitch Mtns, Utah

Extreme elevation relief, ranging from roughly 4,550 feet in Utah Valley and Sanpete Valley to 11,933 feet at the north summit of Mount Nebo — the highest peak in the Wasatch Range. The unit runs approximately 75 miles north to south and averages about 20 miles east to west. The northern third is dominated by the steep, rugged Mount Nebo massif with sheer cliffs, deep canyons, and alpine ridges. The San Pitch Mountains on the southern two-thirds are lower and more rolling, with several peaks above 10,000 feet including Salt Creek Peak and Horse Heaven Mountain. Numerous drainages cut east and west from the spine of both ranges.

Interstate 15 forms the western boundary, and US-89 defines the eastern boundary through Sanpete Valley. The Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway (Forest Road 015, SR-132 corridor) is the primary access corridor through the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache NF on the north end, connecting Nephi and Payson and passing the Payson Lakes Recreation Area, Blackhawk Campground, and multiple trailheads for the Mount Nebo Wilderness. Within the approximately 28,014-acre Mount Nebo Wilderness, motorized access and mechanized transport are prohibited. South of SR-132, the San Pitch Mountains (Manti-La Sal NF, Sanpete District) are accessed from towns such as Fountain Green and Moroni via SR-132 on the east and SR-28/I-15 on the west; the Sanpitch OHV Trail begins northwest of Fountain Green. Maple Canyon is a notable access point. Private land is concentrated at lower elevations in Sanpete and Juab Valleys. Snow can restrict road access at upper elevations in fall.

Vegetation transitions sharply with elevation. Valley floors and lower foothills support sagebrush, rabbitbrush, and cliffrose. Mid-elevations (roughly 6,000–8,500 ft) transition through oakbrush (Gambel oak) and mountain mahogany into dense aspen groves and white fir. Upper slopes support Douglas-fir, Engelmann spruce, and subalpine fir. The Mount Nebo Wilderness holds timber above its roadless core, while the San Pitch Mountains have been documented with areas of deep timber, burned patches (post-fire openings), and broad oakbrush hillsides. Alpine tundra and talus occupy the summit zones of Mount Nebo. Willow and sedge riparian corridors follow creek drainages throughout.

Mule deer are the primary big game species, with a 2024 post-season population estimate of approximately 14,850 — above the 14,000 objective — and a 3-year average buck-to-doe ratio of 18.1 (within the 15–17 objective). The herd draws from higher summer range and migrates to lower winter range in Sanpete and Juab Valleys as snow accumulates. Bucks in the San Pitch Mountains tend toward nocturnal behavior under pressure. Elk (unit 16A) support a winter herd estimated at 2,350 in 2024, modestly above the 2,200 objective; the 3-year average bull age of approximately 7.1 years exceeds the 5.5–6.0 year objective, reflecting quality trophy potential. Calves per 100 cows reached 72 in 2024, indicating strong herd productivity. Mountain goats were introduced in 2007 and now sustain a healthy population on the high cliffs and rocky terrain above 9,000 feet, primarily on Mount Nebo itself. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep occupy the Nebo unit (2 OIAL permits issued annually). Black bears are present throughout mid-elevation timber and are managed with a harvest-objective quota of 10 animals per year for the general season (no bait, no dogs). Mountain lions are present and huntable year-round with a valid license. Merriam's turkeys are present in the oak and mixed-conifer zones of Sanpete County foothills.
