Nebo, Utah

Extreme elevation relief, ranging from approximately 4,550 feet on Utah Valley floors and near Scipio to 11,928 feet at Mount Nebo's north summit. The northern block is dominated by the dramatic ridgelines and cirques of the Wasatch Range, including the designated Mount Nebo Wilderness. To the south, the San Pitch Mountains (peaks to roughly 8,200 ft) and Valley Mountains (east of Scipio) form lower, drier subranges separated by the Sanpete and Sevier valleys. Terrain grades from steep, rocky alpine above treeline on the main Nebo massif to moderate pinyon-juniper foothills and flat agricultural valleys. Much of the terrain at mid-elevation is roadless or only lightly tracked.

Approximately 49% of the unit is public land: roughly 20% USFS, 20% BLM, 9% state trust, and 3% designated Wilderness (Mount Nebo Wilderness). The remaining 51% is private, posing significant access challenges particularly in the Valley Mountains and San Pitch Mountains, where private holdings largely encircle public parcels. The Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway (connecting Nephi to Payson via Highway 132 on the east and Utah Route 213 on the north) is the primary access corridor for the northern high country and reaches trailheads including Andrews Ridge, North Approach, and Willow Creek Canyon. U.S. Highway 28 (Manti–Nephi) bisects the unit, separating the Valley Mountains from the San Pitch Mountains and providing jump-off points for dirt roads and ATV trails into BLM and state parcels. Forest Service roads throughout the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache and Manti-La Sal NF provide dispersed-camping access. Developed campgrounds include Bear Canyon, Ponderosa, and Blackhawk (northern unit, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache NF). The Mount Nebo Wilderness (approximately 28,000 acres) requires non-motorized entry and contains no vehicle routes. Hunters should confirm land status at boundaries, as interspersed private land requires written permission.

Low elevations (4,500–5,500 ft) consist of sagebrush-grass communities and scattered croplands on valley edges. Foothill zones (5,500–7,500 ft) are dominated by pinyon-juniper woodland, Gambel oak, bigtooth maple, and mountain mahogany with grassy openings. Mid-mountain slopes (7,500–10,000 ft) transition to ponderosa pine, aspen groves, and mixed conifer (white fir, Douglas fir), with brushy openings and riparian draws offering prime browse (chokecherry, serviceberry). The high Nebo massif above 10,000 ft carries subalpine spruce-fir forest transitioning to alpine meadows and rocky talus near the summit ridges. Post-fire areas such as the Pole Creek burn have enhanced summer habitat productivity in recent years. The San Pitch and Valley Mountains are drier and more heavily influenced by pinyon-juniper at hunting-season elevations.

Mule deer inhabit the unit year-round and also receive winter migrants from adjacent east-facing ranges; the population has been rebuilding toward a UDWR objective of 14,000 animals after a downward revision. Deer densities are higher on the northern high country and in areas with good aspen and oak-brush habitat; bucks in the drier San Pitch Mountains tend toward more nocturnal activity. Rocky Mountain elk (Central Mtns, Nebo/San Pitch Mtns unit) are managed under a limited-entry-only program; 2024 harvest data shows 88 total LE permits issued across all weapon types, 87 hunters afield, and 56 bulls harvested (64% overall success). Rocky Mountain mountain goats occupy the high alpine terrain of the Nebo massif — one of Utah's more accessible goat hunts — with 2024 data showing 25 total permits (GO6803 ALW: 14 permits, 12 harvested, 84.6%; GO6821 archery: 11 permits, 9 harvested, 80%). Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are present in small numbers (2 OIAL ALW permits annually, RS6725, Oct. 31–Nov. 30; 100% success in 2024). Black bears occur throughout the unit. Mountain lions are present year-round as a standard (non-restricted) cougar management unit (16A and 16A1). Wild turkeys are established in mid-elevation oak-brush and conifer zones.

Bear tag_quota (35) reflects 2026 guidebook totals: spring LE 7 + summer LE 8 + fall LE 5 + multiseason LE 5 + harvest-objective quota 10. 6. Bear hunter_success_pct (31%) and reported_harvest (10) reflect harvest-objective quota utilization per UDWR annual bear report estimates. 7. Turkey and cougar harvest data not tracked at unit level in public UDWR reports. 8. Mountain Lion cougar management units for Nebo are 16A (Nebo excluding West Face) and 16A1 (Nebo-West Face); Nebo is NOT a restricted bear or cougar pursuit unit. 9. Private land (51%) is heavily interspersed, particularly around the Valley Mountains and lower San Pitch.
