Box Elder, West, Utah

Elevation ranges from roughly 4,006 ft on the valley and salt-flat floors near I-80 and the Bonneville Salt Flats to 9,938 ft on the highest peaks, with a median around 5,210 ft and nearly 6,000 ft of total relief. The Raft River Mountains run east-west parallel to the Utah-Idaho border, with moderately steep south and east slopes; the highest point (Dunn Benchmark) reaches 9,925 ft. The Grouse Creek Mountains are narrower and steeper, running north-south with Red Butte topping out near 9,000 ft. The Goose Creek Mountains are lower (Twin Peaks at 8,584 ft) with gentler topography. Broad desert basins and valley floors — including the Grouse Creek, Pilot Creek, and Goose Creek drainages — separate the ranges. Only about 16% of the unit has slopes exceeding 15 degrees; the majority is open high-desert basin with low road density (approximately 0.3 miles of road per square mile). Elevation breakdown: below 5,000 ft 45%, 5,000-6,500 ft 38%, 6,500-8,000 ft 15%, 8,000-9,500 ft 2%.

Approximately 59% of the unit is public land, administered primarily by the Bureau of Land Management (Salt Lake Field Office, Burley Field Office) with a portion of the Sawtooth National Forest (Minidoka Ranger District) covering the upper Raft River Mountains. Private land (roughly 41%) is concentrated in the valley floors, agricultural areas around Grouse Creek and Etna, and checkerboard sections — several large ranches control critical water sources and can complicate access to public parcels. State trust lands are also present. Multiple Cooperative Wildlife Management Units (CWMUs) exist in the Grouse Creek subunit; hunters should verify CWMU boundaries before accessing checkerboard sections. Primary highway access: I-80 forms the southern boundary (Wendover on the west, Snowville on the east); SR-30 runs along the northern edge from Curlew Junction westward toward Rosette and the Nevada line, providing the main corridor into the Grouse Creek Mountains from the east. Key roads include: TL Bar Ranch Road and Leppy Pass Road in the southern end (stemming from I-80), the Lynn Valley Road and Dove Creek Road accessing the Raft River/Grouse Creek interior, and Ingham Pass Road off SR-30 into the BLM Grouse Creek Mountains designated OHV route area. Road quality ranges from maintained gravel to unmaintained two-track requiring high-clearance 4WD or ATV; terrain complexity score 7/10. No wilderness areas or formal NPS units are present.

Sagebrush is the dominant cover type, comprising approximately 55% of the winter range and 58% of the summer range across the broader Box Elder herd unit. Sagebrush-juniper and pure juniper types together account for roughly 31% of the winter range; curl-leaf mountain mahogany and bigleaf maple occupy the drier and more mesic browse sites respectively on the mid-elevation slopes. Scattered pinyon-juniper occurs on foothills and flats, with pinyon-juniper expansion (encroachment into former shrub-steppe) identified as an active management concern in the Grouse Creek and Raft River foothills. Upper elevations (primarily in the Sawtooth National Forest and on Grouse Creek Mountain Range) support aspen, conifers, and forb-grass meadows serving as critical summer range. Valley floors and lower bajadas are desert-shrub and annual grass communities, increasingly dominated by cheatgrass and crested wheatgrass where original sagebrush has declined. Riparian corridors along Grouse Creek, Pilot Creek, Thousand Springs Creek, and Lynn Valley provide cottonwood, willow, and wet-meadow habitat. Water sources are limited and dispersed — springs and small reservoirs (Bull Lake, Lynn Reservoir, Warm Spring Reservoir) are key wildlife attractors, and many springs run dry by midsummer.

Mule deer are present across all elevations; the broader Box Elder Herd Unit #1 is managed for a target of approximately 20,000 wintering animals. Deer summer in the upper Raft River, Goose Creek, and Grouse Creek ranges (including animals that winter in Idaho) and winter along the mountain foothills. Many deer in this unit are migrants from Idaho that move south as snow deepens. The unit faces habitat pressure from sagebrush decline, cheatgrass encroachment, and pinyon-juniper expansion. Pronghorn antelope use the sagebrush flats and rolling hills throughout the western valley areas, concentrating around water sources and stock ponds; the Box Elder West pronghorn herd was estimated at approximately 175 animals (2017 survey). Antelope concentrate in the southwest portion of the unit in groups of 10-20 animals. Rocky Mountain elk are managed primarily in the Grouse Creek subunit (limited-entry bull) with three hunt periods in September-October; the 2018 Goose Creek Fire (132,127 acres burned across Utah and Nevada) significantly impacted elk habitat in the Grouse Creek area. Average 17 public bull elk harvested per year in Grouse Creek subunit. Shiras moose are present in low numbers (once-in-a-lifetime draw, 2-tag quota under broader Box Elder moose unit MB6012). Mountain lion and black bear are present; seasons and units are managed under the separate Utah Black Bear, Cougar and Furbearer Guidebook. Greater sage-grouse occupy sagebrush flats and are a conservation priority species.
