Box Elder, Snowville, Utah

Predominantly flat to gently rolling basin terrain in Curlew Valley at roughly 4,400–5,000 ft elevation, transitioning to the Matlin Mountains (high point ~5,970 ft) and Peplin Mountain area — low, isolated desert ranges with moderate 4WD-accessible slopes. The broader Box Elder deer/elk landscape extends to the Raft River Mountains to the southwest (peaking at 9,925 ft on Dunn Benchmark peak at the head of the Clear Creek drainage), with moderately steep south and east slopes and gentler north and west slopes. Overall the Snowville-specific pronghorn unit is largely flat basin and low-range terrain with minimal technical difficulty.

Primary access via I-84, which passes through Snowville on the Utah-Idaho border; SR-30 (Kelton to Rosette corridor) provides east-west access across the southern portion of the unit and is a noted deer highway-mortality corridor. SR-42 connects to the Grouse Creek/Park Valley area to the west. BLM manages the majority of yearlong elk range (~48%) and a significant share of pronghorn and deer range; Sawtooth National Forest (Raft River Division) administers higher-elevation summer range in the Raft River Mountains. State trust lands (SITLA) account for roughly 2–6% of the unit depending on range type. Private land is substantial — approximately 53% of deer winter range and 45% of elk yearlong range — with ranching operations throughout Curlew Valley and surrounding basins. CWMUs operate within the larger Box Elder area and hold pronghorn (e.g., 'The Rose of Snowville' CWMU — 13,716 acres entirely private); hunters must verify boundaries via UDWR maps. Dirt and two-track roads provide backcountry access on BLM and SITLA lands; 4WD recommended. Snowville serves as the nearest service point (fuel, limited supplies). No designated wilderness areas within the Snowville-specific unit core; roadless terrain exists in the higher Raft River Mountains.

Basin floor: sagebrush (big and black sagebrush dominant, accounting for ~55% of winter deer range unit-wide and 58% of summer range) with native grasses and forbs; cactus and other low-elevation desert shrubs on valley flats. Low mountain ranges (Matlin, Peplin) support sagebrush-juniper and juniper types, which together account for 31% of winter range. Upper Raft River Mountain slopes (relevant to adjacent elk and deer seasonal range) carry aspen-timber on upper edges, curl-leaf mountain mahogany and maple in browse types at mid elevations, black sagebrush on ridgetops, and sagebrush-juniper/juniper on lower slopes. Cheatgrass invasion following the 2018 Goose Creek Fire (132,127 acres in Utah and Nevada) has reduced forage quality across portions of the region. Pinyon-juniper encroachment is an active concern on the unit's west side.

Pronghorn are the primary big-game quarry in the Snowville-specific boundary; the 2017 UDWR population estimate for the Box Elder, Snowville unit was approximately 450 animals, with animals concentrated around the Matlin Mountain and Peplin Mountain areas. Mule deer migrate through and winter in the broader Box Elder basin, using sagebrush foothills in fall and winter and moving to higher Raft River/Grouse Creek elevations in summer; a substantial number of deer spend summers in Idaho then migrate south onto Unit 1 winter ranges. The unit-wide wintering population objective is 20,000 deer (2021 estimated at ~11,700, roughly 59% of objective). Elk are present in low numbers in the adjacent Sawtooth subunit (1d) of the Box Elder elk unit; the population is transitory and minimal — UDWR states there has not appeared to be a permanent elk population in this subunit year-round. Elk move in seasonally from Idaho, the Grouse Creek subunit to the west, and the Hansel Mountain subunit to the east, with sightings reported in Rosevere Canyon/Rosevere Point area and a herd of ~60 observed southwest of Yost in March 2023. Mountain lion and coyote are present as predators affecting deer and pronghorn fawn survival. Sage grouse habitat exists in sagebrush areas. The Goose Creek drainage historically supported larger elk concentrations but populations were reduced after the 2018 wildfire.
