Box Elder, Pilot Mtn, Utah

The Pilot Range runs roughly 30 miles SSW to NNE and averages only 4 miles wide, rising abruptly from the Great Salt Lake Desert floor. Elevation ranges from approximately 4,212 feet on the valley floor to 10,716 feet at Pilot Peak, the highest summit. The upper range is characterized by steep, rugged canyons — Bettridge Canyon, Miner's Canyon, and Raven's Roost — spurring off the main ridgeline. Valley floors and bajadas are relatively flat; slopes in the upper mountain terrain are severe and rocky. The Leppy Hills and Silver Island Mountains are additional sub-ranges within the broader hunt boundary.

Most of the Pilot Range is BLM land (approximately 85.6% of modeled bighorn sheep habitat within the mountain core is BLM; private parcels account for approximately 7.4%, Utah State Institutional Trust Lands 6.5%, and Utah State Parks 0.4%). There is no National Forest within this boundary. Primary highway access: I-80 forms the southern boundary; SR-30 forms the northern boundary. The main range road is Pilot Mountain Road, reached from SR-30; Patterson Pass Road connects westward. Nearly all interior routes require high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles; designated routes only apply for OHV use per BLM order. No wilderness areas are designated within the unit boundary. The unit also includes Nevada Unit 091 (the Nevada side of the Pilot Range), accessible via I-80 west to Pilot Creek Valley Road north to SR-233. A Landowner Association exists within the broader subunit; no CWMUs are identified specifically within the Pilot Mountain subunit 1c itself.

Vegetation is sharply zoned by elevation. Engelmann spruce and limber pine occupy the highest ridges. Pinyon pine, mountain mahogany, and juniper dominate middle elevations (juniper encroachment is a documented management concern). South-facing slopes and ridge tops support sagebrush and perennial grasses. Lower bajadas and valley floors transition to rabbitbrush, greasewood, and cheatgrass. The Leppy Hills and Silver Island Mountains are especially susceptible to short fire cycles and cheatgrass monocultures. Bettridge Creek supports a riparian corridor and is designated habitat for the threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout.

Elk are the primary big game draw, with the Pilot Mountain subunit (1c) population managed at an objective of 400 animals, co-managed with the Nevada Department of Wildlife. As of the 2023 UDWR management plan, the population has increased slowly to near the objective. Elk are present year-round but migrate in response to water availability and drought; summer crop depredation on adjacent private land has increased in recent years due to declining habitat quality. Bull rut begins as early as the first week of September. Average annual bull elk harvest on this subunit is 12 animals (5-year average per 2023 UDWR plan). Mule deer are present but sparse across the unit. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (introduced 1987) occupy the southern Pilot Mountains, Leppy Hills, and Silver Island Mountains; the herd grew to approximately 100 animals by 2010 but suffered from respiratory disease and has fluctuated between 40 and 70 animals since; population was estimated at 58 in 2018, well below the objective of 125. Mountain lion is the primary predator of bighorn sheep in this unit; Pilot Mountain is designated a harvest-objective cougar unit. Lahontan cutthroat trout occupy Bettridge Creek.

1. The 'Box Elder, Pilot Mtn' boundary (subunit 1c) is defined in the 2023 UDWR Elk Herd Unit #1 plan: SR-30 north, I-80 south, Utah-Nevada state line west, Range 15W/16W township line east. Also serves as bighorn sheep WMU #1 per the 2019 UDWR plan. 2. The elk hunt is interstate: Utah tags also cover Nevada Unit 091 (Pilot Range Nevada side). 3. No general spike elk season on this unit due to cooperative agreement with Nevada. 4. Bighorn herd suppressed below objective since ~2011 due to respiratory disease; no augmentation planned until domestic sheep grazing allotment conflicts are resolved. 5.
