The unit spans roughly 5,500 to 8,500 feet in elevation (BLM Vernal Field Office). The northern and lower reaches consist of desert shrub benches and open flats grading up into dissected mesas and plateau rims of the Tavaputs Plateau. Deep valleys and canyons — including the Bitter Creek drainage — cut the landscape, many holding perennial streams. South-facing buttes and sedimentary sandstone cliffs define much of the visual character.

Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer are also present throughout, using higher-elevation aspen and timber. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, black bear, and mountain lion inhabit the canyon rims and rocky terrain. Wild horses are present in portions of the broader Book Cliffs BLM area. A large bison herd resides on the adjacent Uintah and Ouray Reservation but is not accessible to public hunters. Sage grouse and blue grouse are found in appropriate habitat.
