Tioga, Oregon

Steep Coast Range ridgelines and drainages characterize the unit, with elevations ranging from sea level along the coast and bay shorelines to roughly 3,200 feet on the highest inland ridges. The western half of the unit generally sits below 1,000 feet; the eastern half reaches 1,000 to 2,200 feet. Terrain is heavily dissected with narrow ridges and deep creek drainages, and slopes steeper than 34 degrees are common on public ground.

The unit is accessed via US Highway 101 along the coast, State Highway 42 through the Coquille and South Fork Coquille corridors, and the Umpqua-Melrose Road on the eastern boundary. The BLM Coos Bay District (Myrtlewood Field Office, North Bend, 541-756-0100) manages approximately 325,000 acres across the Coast Range and is a primary source for road and access information. The Elliott State Forest (roughly 90,000 acres, managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry) is a major block of huntable public land within the unit. Public land is arranged in a checkerboard pattern with private industrial timberland, so hunters must confirm legal access across private parcels to reach some public tracts. Weyerhaeuser's Millicoma Tree Farm east of Coos Bay covers approximately 16 percent of the unit; a paid annual recreational access permit (price subject to change — verify at recreation.weyerhaeuser.com) is required to hunt this land. Reference land-ownership maps are available through the Oregon Department of Forestry and the BLM Coos Bay District before planning access routes.

Dense coastal rainforest dominates, with Sitka spruce, western hemlock, Douglas-fir, western red cedar, red alder, and bigleaf maple forming the primary canopy. The forest floor is characteristically thick with sword fern, salal, and brush. Active and recent timber harvest areas on private and state lands produce the early-successional shrub and grass patches that support the highest deer and elk densities. Coastal dune and estuary habitat is present along the Pacific shoreline and Coos Bay margins.

Columbia Black-tailed deer are the primary big game species, using clear-cuts, forest edges, and shrubby early-successional cover year-round. Roosevelt elk are present throughout the unit; the rut typically begins in early September and runs for approximately a month. Elk use old-growth timber stands for cover and move to open timber harvest areas to feed. Black bear are present and huntable. Cougar are present as predators of deer and elk populations. A small population of Columbian White-tailed deer (a federally threatened distinct population segment) also exists in parts of the unit but is not open to hunting.
