Unit 114, Nevada

The Snake Range runs north-south through the unit with peaks exceeding 12,000 feet. Mount Moriah (12,067 ft) is the high point. The unit spans roughly 7,000 feet of relief, rising from Snake Valley and Spring Valley floors at approximately 5,100 ft through rolling foothills, deep canyons (Eightmile, Salt Marsh, Deerhead, Deadman, Hendrys, Hampton, Horse, Timber, Deep Canyons), the high plateau known as The Table, and steep upper ridgelines to White Cloud Peak.

Unit 114 is predominantly public land managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (Ely Ranger District) and the BLM Ely Field Office. The Mount Moriah Wilderness occupies the high core of the range; vehicles and mechanized equipment including wheeled game carriers are prohibited inside the wilderness boundary. Primary paved access: US Highways 6/50 and 93 to the west, Nevada Highways 894 and 487, and Utah Highway 21 and the Gandy Road on the east side. White Pine County Roads 37 and 41 provide good perimeter access. The Fourmile Road (from the west base) and Eightmile Road provide access to upper elevations — both are steep and rocky; most hunters avoid pulling trailers on Fourmile Road. The Silver Creek Road on the southeast side is ATV-only. Wilderness trailheads include Big Canyon, Hendrys Creek, Hampton Creek, Horse Canyon, and Smith Creek; trail conditions in Hampton Creek, Horse Canyon, and Smith Creek are degraded due to erosion and lack of maintenance. Lower valley floors and foothills support sagebrush and native grasses. Mid-elevation slopes are dominated by pinyon pine and juniper woodland. Riparian corridors and protected canyon aspects support aspen stands. Upper slopes and north-facing drainages carry conifer forest. Near treeline and on The Table, bristlecone pine patches, subalpine meadows, and alpine grassland occur. Above treeline, sparse alpine vegetation persists to the summit.

Mule deer are present unit-wide at lower-than-average density; highest concentrations occur in Miller Basin, Salt Marsh Canyon, Deerhead Canyon, Deadman Canyon, and Timber Creek, and along the ridgeline from Eightmile Canyon north to White Cloud Peak. Rocky Mountain elk are distributed throughout the unit; summer concentrations center on the high-elevation Mount Moriah Wilderness canyons (Hendrys, Hampton, Horse, Timber, Deep, and Deadman). In fall and early winter, cows are found along the Eightmile-to-White Cloud ridgeline and in Smith Canyon. Elk also move between units 114 and 115 via Sacramento Pass. Pronghorn antelope occupy Snake Valley and Spring Valley and range upward into open hills; the Little Hills area toward Sulphur Springs is productive. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep inhabit the upper Snake Range; early-season animals use The Table, Mount Moriah summit area, and Deep Canyon, then move to lower winter range in the Cove, lower Hendrys Creek, Smith Creek, and Central Peak. Survey data from 2024 classified 98 bighorn in unit 114 (largest sample in the statewide Rocky Mountain bighorn count of 219), with strong lamb ratios of 65 lambs:100 ewes statewide — the population is growing but no mature rams were detected in sufficient numbers to support a 2025 ram harvest. Mountain lion are present as predators of deer and bighorn. Sage grouse and chukar are documented in lower-elevation habitats.

Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep: NDOW explicitly did not offer a 2025 ram season for unit 114 due to lack of detected mature rams, confirmed in both the bighorn hunt sheet and CR 25-13 narrative. 4. Hunter success rates and reported harvest by unit are not published in the sources consulted. 5. Great Basin National Park (unit 115) does not affect unit 114 hunting, but hunters in the area must know the park boundary. 6. Utah state line bisects Snake Valley within unit 114 — pronghorn and bighorn range across the state line; Nevada regulations govern on the Nevada side only.
