Unit 051, Nevada

The unit spans a wide elevation band from irrigated agricultural valleys at roughly 4,400–5,000 ft along the Humboldt River corridor up to 9,732 ft at Granite Peak in the Santa Rosa Range. The Santa Rosa Range forms the spine of the unit — moderately to steeply sloped mountain terrain with high-elevation basins, ridgelines, and drainages including the Eight-Mile and Paradise Peak drainages. The Osgood Mountains on the southern fringe are open and sparsely treed. The Hot Springs Range and the broad Owyhee Desert in the northeast are lower, more open desert terrain. Large sagebrush valleys with irrigated crop fields border the western edge along US-95.

Primary vehicle access runs along US Highway 95 on the western side of the unit from Winnemucca north toward McDermitt and Orovada. Highway 290 east from US-95 leads to Paradise Valley and provides access into the central Santa Rosa Range and associated drainages. Interstate 80 at Golconda (southern boundary) gives access to the Osgood Mountains and Hot Springs Range. Secondary and dirt roads throughout the unit provide moderate access; high-clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended for most non-highway travel. The Santa Rosa–Paradise Peak Wilderness (~31,000 acres, southern end of the Santa Rosa Range) is closed to motorized vehicles and requires non-motorized entry. Public land is managed by the BLM Winnemucca District and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Santa Rosa Ranger District. The Lye Creek Campground (USFS primitive site, ~$8/day; water, tables, fire pits, toilets) is the only developed campground in the area, located in the Santa Rosa Range approximately 60 miles north of Winnemucca. Fuel, food, and lodging are available in McDermitt and Orovada; gas and food are also available at the Paradise Hill convenience store at the junction of Highways 95 and 290. Paradise Valley has limited food and no gas.

Vegetation follows a clear elevational gradient: irrigated crop fields and greasewood/rabbitbrush in the lower valleys; big sagebrush and native grasses in foothills and lower slopes; dense pinyon-juniper and mountain mahogany in the mid-elevation zone; aspen stands and limber pine at upper elevations on the Santa Rosa Range. The Santa Rosa–Paradise Peak Wilderness (~31,000 acres) at the southern end of the range holds alpine-like terrain above timber line. Riparian corridors with willows and cottonwoods follow major drainages. The Osgood Mountains and Owyhee Desert are predominantly open sagebrush with very few trees.

Mule deer are the primary big game and occupy the full range from valley foothills and agricultural fields to high-elevation Santa Rosa basins; most harvest comes from the Santa Rosa Range and associated drainages. Post-season 2024 surveys documented a strong 46 bucks per 100 does ratio and 63 fawns per 100 does — well above average, supporting population growth. Four-point or better bucks comprised 60% of the 2024-2025 harvest. Pronghorn antelope occupy the sagebrush valleys, desert plains, and lower foothills including the Owyhee Desert and areas around Paradise Valley. California bighorn sheep inhabit the Santa Rosa Range; the unit draws 873 or more applications for just 2 resident ram tags, indicating a highly valued trophy-class opportunity. A small elk population is present primarily in or near the Santa Rosa Range; tags are extremely limited (2 resident ALW tags and 1 muzzleloader tag in recent years). Mountain lion range throughout the unit following deer and bighorn sheep populations. Chukar partridge seasons are generally open during the regular deer season. Trout fishing is available in Santa Rosa Range creeks (check NDOW fishing regulations for open waters).
