Unit 55B, New Mexico

GMU 55B spans a gradient from the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo/Cimarron Range on the west side down to rolling mesa-grasslands and shortgrass prairie approaching Springer on the southeast. Elevations range from approximately 5,700 feet near Springer to roughly 7,000–7,500 feet in the western foothills around Cimarron and the Whittington Center. The western portion is hilly to mountainous; the eastern and southern portions flatten into the Canadian River watershed plains typical of northeast New Mexico.

The unit is bounded by three highways: I-25 (east side), US 64 (Raton south to Cimarron, west/north side), and NM 21 (Cimarron south through Rayado and Miami to Springer, south side). Access within the unit is almost entirely through private property. The NRA Whittington Center (33,300 acres, near Raton on US 64) offers paid guided hunts for elk, mule deer, pronghorn, turkey, and black bear — not open for walk-in public hunting. Philmont Scout Ranch (140,177 acres, along NM 21 south of Cimarron) is private BSA property and is not open for public hunting. Other landholdings are private ranches. Some New Mexico State Trust Land parcels may be accessible to licensed hunters under the NMSLO-Game Commission easement agreement: hunters may access marked state trust land access points during the applicable license period plus a 14-day scouting window; no off-road vehicle travel is permitted. There is no National Forest and no BLM within the unit. The Cimarron District NMDGF office covers the unit. Hunters pursuing elk must contact individual ranches or outfitters to secure EPLUS private-land authorizations. GMU 55B is in the EPLUS Primary Management Zone (not the Special Management Zone, which covers only 55A, GMU 46, and GMU 54 west of SR 199).

Vegetation transitions from pinyon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine on the western and higher terrain to mixed-grass and shortgrass prairie on the eastern and lower portions. Riparian corridors with cottonwood and willow follow arroyos draining into the Canadian River drainage. Irrigated cropland and ranch meadows are scattered throughout, particularly near Springer and along NM 21. HuntScore describes the dominant habitat as low elevation grassland, irrigated cropland, and riparian corridor, with the foothills supporting scattered timber cover.

Elk inhabit the western foothills and ranch lands; the unit supports huntable populations managed almost entirely through the EPLUS private-land authorization system. Mule deer range broadly across the grassland, pinyon-juniper, and foothills habitats. Pronghorn are well-established in the open grasslands and mesa country especially toward the Springer side of the unit — northeast New Mexico near Springer is recognized as high-quality pronghorn range. Black bear are present in the timbered western portions. Merriam's turkey occur in canyon and foothill timber near the Cimarron-area ranches. Mountain lion are present throughout. The NRA Whittington Center reports elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and turkey on its property. Elk rut can begin as early as the first week of September and run for approximately one month.
