Unit 42, New Mexico

GMU 42 blends two distinct landforms: broad, flat grassland valleys and rolling mesa tops on the Great Plains transition zone, punctuated by deeply incised canyon systems carved by the Canadian River, Cañon Largo, Cañon Olguin, and Lagartija Creek. Elevation across the unit ranges from roughly 4,500 ft in the canyon bottoms of the Sabinoso area to approximately 6,000 ft on the higher mesa tops (Wikipedia/BLM confirmed range). The Sabinoso Wilderness is characterized by high, narrow mesas surrounded by cliff-lined canyon walls; the transition from open plains to these canyon systems is abrupt. Terrain difficulty varies dramatically: mesa tops are relatively easy walking, while canyon descents are rugged and physically demanding with no maintained trails.

Public land is extremely limited at approximately 11% of the unit (roughly 3% BLM, 7% State Trust, 1% Wilderness). The three main public-land concentrations are: (1) the Sabinoso Wilderness (BLM-managed, ~29,855 acres in San Miguel County — originally 16,030 acres at 2009 designation, expanded by 9,855-acre donation via Trust for Public Land in 2021), accessed from I-25 exit 345 east on NM-104 for 32.7 miles to Trujillo, then north on San Miguel County Road C51A approximately 7 miles of improved dirt road and 3 miles of lightly maintained road to the parking area; the road is impassable when wet, no cell service, motorized/mechanized use prohibited; managed by the BLM Taos Field Office (575-758-8851); (2) scattered BLM and State Trust parcels along the Canadian River corridor in the center of the unit; (3) BLM land along Cañon Largo near the southern portion. The remainder of the unit (approximately 89%) is private ranch land, much of it in large ownership blocks. Many public-land parcels are checkerboarded and landlocked by private land, requiring written permission from bordering landowners to access them overland. State Trust Land is accessible to holders of a valid New Mexico hunting license during active hunt season plus a 7-day pre-season scouting window; off-road vehicle travel is prohibited on State Trust Land. No National Forest land is present within GMU 42. A second public access point was planned as part of the 2021 expansion — verify current status with BLM Taos Field Office. There are no paved roads into the wilderness interior; hunters planning wilderness access should be prepared for foot or horse travel. Camping is permitted on BLM land (14-day limit) but not on State Trust Land without lessee permission.

Mesa tops support a perennial warm-season grass savanna (blue grama, buffalo grass, sideoats grama) transitioning to piñon-juniper woodland on slopes and canyon rims. Canyon walls carry piñon pine and juniper as the dominant woodland, with scattered clusters of ponderosa pine at higher elevations. Canyon bottoms along ephemeral and perennial drainages support riparian corridors of cottonwood and willow. The broader unit includes short-grass and mid-grass plains typical of the northeastern New Mexico Great Plains, making it one of the more open and arid units compared to the Sangre de Cristo or Jemez high-country units. Water is scarce, especially in canyon interiors, and is often the limiting resource for both wildlife and hunters.

Mule deer are the primary big-game target; they concentrate in rough canyon terrain and near water sources. White-tailed deer (Texas-lineage) are present and expanding, particularly in the eastern portions of the unit bordering Texas and Oklahoma; GMU 42 is one of several northeastern units where whitetail have been colonizing. Elk are present in limited numbers and largely confined to private ranch holdings in the unit; a modest draw hunt exists. Pronghorn are widely distributed across the grassland mesa tops and valleys, though populations in the northeastern plains units (41, 42, 47, 56–59) have declined in recent years due to drought and poor fawn survival, prompting NMDGF to reduce tag allocations beginning 2025. Barbary sheep (aoudad) are present in scattered canyon-rim habitat, particularly near Canadian River drainages; populations are relatively thin compared to southeastern New Mexico strongholds but huntable. Black bear and mountain lion (cougar) are present; both are over-the-counter hunts in this area. Wild turkey (Rio Grande) inhabit riparian drainages and piñon-juniper slopes within the unit. Mule deer rut typically runs late October through late December; elk rut begins in early September.
