District 590, Montana

Rolling ponderosa pine hills, sandstone ridges, buttes, and coulees. The Bull Mountains average around 3,845 ft; the highest point (Dunn Mountain, Yellowstone County) reaches 4,744 ft. Foothills drop to the Yellowstone River (approximately 2,900 ft) on the south and the Musselshell River drainage on the north. Relief is moderate — the unit lacks dramatic cliff faces but is deeply dissected by drainages and coulees. Terrain ease is generally low, with the rolling ponderosa and sandstone terrain making off-trail travel challenging.

The district is roughly 90% private land, making access the defining challenge. Public land consists of approximately 4% BLM (managed by the BLM Billings Field Office, 5001 Southgate Dr, Billings, MT) and 6% state DNRC sections, many of which are isolated or landlocked by private ownership. Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 run through the southern portion of the district (Yellowstone River corridor); US Highway 87 crosses from Billings northeast toward Roundup and bisects the Bull Mountains. County gravel roads provide access throughout both the Bull Mountains and Pine Ridge, but most lead onto private ranch land. The Montana FWP Block Management Program (Region 5) enrolls some private ranches in the district for public hunting access; the annual Access Guide lists enrolled properties. Outfitter-guided hunts on private ranches are a common access strategy. There are no designated National Forest or Wilderness areas within HD 590. Dominant cover is ponderosa pine forest, with the western Bull Mountains more densely forested than the eastern reaches. Scattered juniper and cedar occur on dry ridges and south-facing slopes. Grassy meadows and tracts of sagebrush intersperse the timber throughout. Riparian corridors along the Yellowstone River and Musselshell River support cottonwood and willow bottomland habitat where white-tailed deer concentrate. Numerous grassy clearings within the forested areas provide elk and mule deer feeding habitat. Merriam's turkey occur in the ponderosa pine habitat.

Mule deer are distributed throughout the district in ponderosa pine and sagebrush habitats, though numbers are below historical highs. White-tailed deer are present primarily in Yellowstone River and Musselshell River riparian bottoms. Elk numbers are significant — the Bull Mountains Elk Management Unit count was 3,717 in 2023, above the FWP objective range of 2,400–3,600; the herd is above objective and antlerless harvest is encouraged. Branch-antlered bull elk require a limited draw permit (590-20). Mountain lion are present in the ponderosa pine hills. Merriam's turkey occur in the ponderosa habitat. Rattlesnakes are present and active through approximately November 1.
