District 515, Montana

Predominantly open prairie with broken terrain of coulees and ridges; scattered ponderosa pine, cedar, and juniper occur in the southern portions of the district and near Rapelje. Public land parcels are relatively flat. Elevation ranges from approximately 3,500 to 4,000 feet. The Musselshell and Yellowstone river bottomlands provide distinct riparian corridors cutting through the otherwise semi-arid upland landscape.

HD 515 is approximately 93% private land; access is the dominant challenge. State school sections (DNRC lands) are scattered throughout the district but are legally accessible only via public road, navigable waterway, or adjacent federal land — crossing private land to reach them requires landowner permission. A number of private ranches participate in FWP's Block Management Program (BMP); Region 5 hosts approximately 105 BMAs covering ~505,602 acres. Cottonwood-willow riparian gallery forest lines the Yellowstone and Musselshell river corridors and associated tributaries. Hayfields and irrigated cropland are interspersed on private ranch land.

Elk populations have been trending upward in HD 515 with notable harvest in both archery and rifle seasons; however, the majority of elk are observed on private land. Mule deer numbers are below historical averages with chronic wasting disease (CWD) documented in the region — the 2024 season restricted general-license harvest to antlered bucks only in HDs 502, 515, 555, and 590 in response to population decline (confirmed by FWP 2024 news release). White-tailed deer concentrate almost exclusively in the Yellowstone and Musselshell river bottomlands. Pronghorn antelope are present in the district's open prairie and sagebrush sections. Black bear and mountain lion are present at low densities across the coulee and breaks habitats. Rattlesnakes are present through approximately November 1. Gray wolves occasionally disperse through south-central Montana but are not a primary resident species in this agricultural valley district.
