District 425, Montana

The district spans roughly 4,100 to 8,300 feet in elevation. The western boundary follows the crest of Sawtooth Mountain (Sawtooth Reef) and Lime Ridge along the abrupt face of the Rocky Mountain Front; terrain here is steep and rocky. Moving east, the landscape transitions from timbered mountain slopes to rolling foothill grassland with potholes, willow creek drainages, and open flats. The Sun River WMA sits at approximately 4,962 feet elevation (19,744 acres; verified via FWP). Benchmark Road marks the southern boundary; the Sun River forms the northern boundary. Primary public access is via Sun Canyon Road / Gibson Reservoir Road running west from Augusta into the Sun River WMA; gravel roads within the WMA are passable by standard vehicles but narrow and rough deeper in. The WMA is closed to public access from December 1 to noon May 15 annually to protect wintering elk. Vegetation is highly diverse along the elevation gradient. Upper slopes hold Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and aspen stands giving way to open rocky ridgelines.
