District 343, Montana

The district spans roughly 246 square miles with elevations ranging from approximately 5,000 to 7,600 feet. Terrain is moderately steep — 80 percent of the area has slopes of 25 degrees or less — but steeper ridgelines and drainages provide topographic relief. The eastern portions near the private-land fringe are more open and rolling, while the core of the district rises into rugged forested mountain terrain. Snow accumulation can be heavy, and tire chains are recommended on Forest Service roads in late season.

Primary road access includes Montana Highway 279 (the main Helena-Lincoln corridor), Stemple Pass Road (County Road 601, which crosses the Continental Divide at 6,376 feet), Marysville Road, Little Prickly Pear Road, Austin Road, and Highway 12 along the southern edge. The Stemple Pass Trailhead (approximately 12 miles southeast of Lincoln off Highway 279) is a key public-land entry point managed by the Helena Ranger District of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest (406-449-5201). Most USFS roads terminate at trailheads, concentrating hunting pressure; hunters willing to leave roads and climb into steeper terrain encounter significantly less competition. Approximately 57 percent of the district is public land (41% USFS, 12% BLM, 4% State), with roughly 41 percent private land. Several private landowners participate in the FWP Block Management Area program.

Dominant cover includes ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir at lower to mid-elevations, transitioning to lodgepole pine and subalpine fir at higher elevations. Sage and juniper occur in lower-elevation openings and on drier south-facing slopes. High-elevation areas support bear grass, huckleberry, and subalpine fir. Meadow openings are present throughout and provide glassing opportunities.

Elk are present district-wide and are part of the Granite Butte Elk Management Unit (EMU). FWP Region 3 forecasts describe Helena-area elk populations as generally robust and increasing yet remaining within population goal ranges. Elk in neighboring HD 293 use that district as a refuge during hunting seasons and migrate east across the Continental Divide into HD 343 winter range after rifle season ends. White-tailed deer are present throughout the forested portions of the district; Helena-area whitetail populations appear stable or increasing based on recent harvest data. Mule deer occupy drier, more open terrain, particularly on south-facing slopes and lower-elevation transitions; populations north of Helena have shown good recruitment and some growth in recent years but remain well below long-term historical averages. Black bear inhabit the forested drainages. Mountain lion are present in the Helena-area districts.
