District 291, Montana

Rolling to moderately steep foothill terrain of the lower Garnet Range at elevations roughly 4,000–5,200 ft. The lower portions consist of gently sloping sage-grassland benches and cottonwood/red-cedar creek bottoms; the upper terrain becomes increasingly steep with harvested and regenerating conifer stands on north-facing ridges.

Public land comprises roughly 20–22% of the district (GoHunt: 20.2%; HuntScore: 22%) with BLM and State DNRC accounting for the bulk. Some Lolo National Forest land is present in the western portion. No designated wilderness areas are within HD 291. Mule deer are present and well-managed for trophy quality, though larger bucks concentrate on private agricultural bottomlands. White-tailed deer are common in riparian and lower-slope habitats. Mountain lion are present as incidental predators in the conifer-shrub transition zone. Pronghorn occur in limited numbers in the sage-grassland lower country and are subject to special drawing with historically low tag numbers. Black bear are present though the district's open character and moderate elevation make them less abundant than in higher-elevation western districts. No moose, bighorn sheep, or mountain goat populations have been documented as huntable in this district.
