The district occupies a relatively flat river valley floor at approximately 3,690–4,540 feet elevation, making it one of the lower-relief units in Region 2. Riparian corridor vegetation dominates the valley bottom: cottonwood galleries, willow and alder thickets, and dense underbrush line the Blackfoot River and Nevada Creek. Agricultural hay meadows and irrigated pastures are interspersed throughout the private ranch core. Upland benches transition to big sagebrush and CRP grasslands on the rolling foothills. At higher elevations on the Garnet Range margins and Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest lands, lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir, and mixed conifer forest take over. Ponderosa pine appears on drier south-facing slopes. The Aunt Molly WMA (1,182 acres northwest of Helmville) and Nevada Lake WMA (1,522 acres southeast of Helmville) provide additional protected riparian and wetland habitat. The Blackfoot Waterfowl Production Area (USFWS, 1,873 acres southeast of Ovando) adds prairie pothole and wetland cover.

The district is a recognized wintering ground for elk that move down from surrounding mountain ranges to valley-floor meadows and pastures during late fall and winter. White-tailed deer are the primary deer species, using riparian cottonwood bottoms and creek corridors as fawning grounds and year-round habitat; the Blackfoot River and Nevada Creek drainages support a healthy whitetail population. Mule deer are present on the sagebrush and CRP upland benches and foothills. Elk populations in the broader Blackfoot drainage have been near or below the lower range of management objectives in recent years (confirmed by FWP Region 2). Grizzly bears are a significant and well-documented presence, particularly around the Aunt Molly WMA and along the Blackfoot River; hunters are advised to carry bear spray at all times. The district also supports upland game birds (ruffed grouse, blue grouse) in riparian and forest edge habitats, and the Blackfoot River is a blue-ribbon trout fishery.
