Unit 42, Idaho

The unit covers approximately 859,602 acres (about 1,343 square miles) of rugged high-desert terrain dominated by basalt plateaus, deeply eroded river canyons, and isolated mountain peaks. Elevation ranges from roughly 2,000 feet at canyon bottoms to over 8,400 feet at high points in the Owyhee Mountains (Hayden Peak reaches 8,403 ft). The topography is characterized by steep canyon walls with vertical cliffs, placid canyon pools, and broad sage-covered upland flats. Roughly 32% of the unit lies within designated wilderness (Owyhee River Wilderness and Pole Creek Wilderness), where no motorized vehicles are permitted.

Unit 42 is almost entirely BLM-managed: approximately 92.3% BLM (about 793,000 acres), 3.4% State of Idaho, and only 4.3% private. The Owyhee Field Office (101 South Bruneau Highway, Marsing, ID 83639; 208-896-5912) manages the area. Primary highway access is US-95, which runs north-south through Jordan Valley, Oregon just west of the unit. From the north, ID-51 south from Bruneau through the Duck Valley Indian Reservation provides access to the northeastern portions. The Owyhee Uplands Backcountry Byway (a BLM-designated route) traverses roughly 91 miles through Idaho and 12 miles into Oregon, connecting Jordan Valley to Bruneau via unimproved two-track roads that require high-clearance 4WD. Interior access roads include the Poison Creek-Mud Flat Road and the 45 Ranch Road (reached via Boney Lane south of Bruneau). Many canyon-bottom areas require horses or foot travel; river canyons are accessible by raft. Two designated wilderness areas prohibit all motorized and mechanized travel: the Owyhee River Wilderness (259,774 acres, 30.22% of unit) and the Pole Creek Wilderness (13,405 acres, 1.56% of unit). Hunters should fuel up in Jordan Valley, Oregon, or Bruneau, Idaho, as there are no services within the unit.

Vegetation is overwhelmingly sagebrush-steppe and desert shrub, comprising approximately 81% of the landscape. Riparian corridors along the Owyhee River and its tributaries account for about 7-8% and support willows, cottonwoods, and water-dependent grasses that concentrate wildlife. Forested areas (approximately 11%) consist primarily of juniper woodlands and scattered mountain mahogany on canyon rims and mid-elevation slopes; higher elevations in the Owyhee Mountains carry some mixed conifer. There is no National Forest land within Unit 42.

The unit supports a managed elk herd in the Owyhee Elk Zone (shared with Units 40 and 41); herds are described by IDFG as stable to growing. Mule deer inhabit the sagebrush uplands and canyon terrain; general-season deer hunting is restricted to bucks with two points or fewer on at least one antler, reflecting yearling-dominated harvest patterns. Pronghorn occur on the open sagebrush flats and are managed exclusively through controlled hunts (no general OTC pronghorn tags exist in Idaho). California bighorn sheep occupy the Owyhee River canyon walls, with the majority of suitable habitat inside the Owyhee Canyonlands Wilderness; a small number of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep tags are also issued for the broader hunt zone. Mountain lion and gray wolf are present and have established huntable populations. Upland birds including chukar partridge, California quail, sage-grouse, and sharp-tailed grouse use the canyon breaks and upland shrub. Wild horses are managed by BLM across several herd management areas in the region.
