Unit 85, Colorado

Elevation spans from approximately 6,025 feet near Trinidad along the I-25 corridor to 13,518 feet on Trinchera Peak in the Sangre de Cristo Range. The Spanish Peaks — West Spanish Peak (13,623 ft) and East Spanish Peak (12,708 ft) — dominate the western horizon. Terrain transitions from flat valley bottoms and rolling prairie foothills in the east to moderately steep and then steep mountain terrain in the west. Eighty percent of the public land area has slopes of 27 degrees or less. The Spanish Peaks Wilderness (19,226 acres within San Isabel NF, designated 2000) lies in the southwestern portion of the unit and is a key public hunting block. Vegetation transitions across elevation zones. Valley bottoms support grassland and semi-arid shrubland. Foothills carry pinyon-juniper woodland transitioning to oakbrush (Gambel oak) thickets. Mid-elevation zones on the San Isabel NF and private ranches feature ponderosa pine and mixed pine-oak. Upper elevations are covered by spruce-fir forest with intermixed open parks and meadows. Alpine tundra exists near the highest Sangre de Cristo summits. Riparian corridors follow the Purgatoire River forks, Apishapa drainage, Huerfano River drainage, and Cucharas River valley. The Cuchara Creek area on the west side includes cottonwood bottoms along the South Fork of the Purgatoire.

Elk are present throughout the unit, with the highest densities in the San Isabel NF and on large private ranches including Twin Peaks and Hill ranches. Summer range extends into high-elevation spruce-fir parks and mountain meadows of the Sangre de Cristo foothills. As seasons progress, elk push into lower drainages including the Huerfano River, Apishapa, and Cross Mountain areas.
