Elevation ranges from approximately 6,142 feet at Webster Park (lower Arkansas River corridor) to 8,700 feet at Gem Mountain. The landscape mixes relatively flat rolling terrain in the middle parks with steep, rocky canyons draining toward Grape Creek and the Arkansas River. Rugged gulches, long draws, and canyon slopes characterize the BLM backcountry, while wide open parks break up the middle third of the unit. Approximately 80% of public land has a slope of 27 degrees or less.

Primary access highways are US Highway 50 (northern boundary along the Arkansas River) and Colorado State Highway 69 (western edge near Westcliffe). Fremont County Road 27 connects interior areas. Three BLM Wilderness Study Areas managed by the Royal Gorge Field Office lie within the unit: McIntyre Hills WSA (16,789 acres, approximately 20 miles west of Cañon City), Lower Grape Creek WSA (14,258 acres, approximately 6 miles southwest of Cañon City via West Bear Gulch trailhead), and Upper Grape Creek WSA (9,567 acres, approximately 6 miles southwest of Cañon City via West Bear Gulch trailhead). Riparian corridors follow Grape Creek and lesser drainages with cottonwood and willow. The BLM Wilderness Study Areas contain pinyon-juniper, ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and riparian species along creek drainages.

The unit supports resident herds of elk, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope. Elk concentrate in the middle third of the unit during early archery and rifle seasons; bulls and pronghorn bucks are noted to retreat to private ranches, making public-land hunting more challenging. Mule deer distribute throughout the unit with bucks occupying varied terrain; deer use higher-elevation BLM and state land in summer and migrate to lower private foothills in winter.
