Unit 581, Colorado

Elevation ranges from approximately 5,250 feet near Canon City (south boundary along US 50) to 10,863 feet on Stoll Mountain, with Wilkerson Pass at approximately 9,504 feet marking the northwestern edge near US 24. The northwest corner lies in South Park, a broad high-elevation basin of level to rolling prairie. Moving southeast and south, terrain transitions to moderately steep foothills cut by drainages, then steep canyon and mountain terrain in the Phantom Canyon corridor on the eastern boundary and along the Arkansas River watershed on the south. Rocky outcrops, ridgelines (Cap Rock Ridge, Witcher Mountain, Stoll Mountain), and isolated peaks characterize the middle and upper elevations.

Unit boundaries: north - US Highway 24; east - Colorado Highway 67 and Phantom Canyon Road (the historic Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad grade, a BLM-managed gravel road connecting Canon City to Victor); south - US Highway 50; west - Colorado Highway 9 and Park County Road 59. Overall hunter access is rated fair to good by CPW, with the caveat that some public land parcels are blocked by surrounding private holdings and subdivisions near Divide and Cripple Creek. Public land (35% of unit per CPW) consists of several distinct blocks. Pike National Forest covers more than 79 square miles in the unit, administered by the Pike National Forest South Platte Ranger District (Woodland Park office, 719-636-1602), with access off secondary roads branching from US 24 and CO 67. BLM land managed by the Royal Gorge Field Office lies primarily in the eastern portion along Phantom Canyon Road and in scattered parcels southeast of the unit. State Wildlife Areas open to hunting include Dome Rock (6,980 acres south of Divide off CO 67; foot and horseback access only). State Parks with limited hunting include Mueller State Park (approximately 800 acres on the western side open to hunting, accessed via trails 5, 11, and 13 only; hunting permitted Tuesday after Labor Day through Friday before Memorial Day; foot access only within the park boundary to the hunting area) and Eleven Mile State Park (no hunting within 100 yards of facilities). State Trust Lands (Badger Flats, Deer Haven, Eleven Mile, Saddle Mountain parcels) are open September 1 through end of February to licensed hunters on foot or horseback; access points off CR 59 southeast of Hartsel serve the Eleven Mile STL. The remaining 65% of the unit is private ranch land, requiring landowner permission.

Vegetation shifts markedly with elevation. The South Park basin supports high prairie grasses including buffalo grass, blue grama, and Indian grass. Lower foothills and canyon walls carry pinyon-juniper woodland with scattered sagebrush and shrubs including bitterbrush and mountain mahogany. The Arkansas River corridor and drainages like Four Mile Creek feature riparian cottonwood and willow galleries. Mid-elevations (roughly 7,000-9,000 ft) host oakbrush, ponderosa pine, and aspen groves. The upper reaches of Pike National Forest support mixed spruce-fir and Douglas fir stands. No alpine tundra is present, as the highest point (Stoll Mountain at 10,863 ft) does not reach treeline at this latitude.

Mule deer are the primary big game species, with winter concentration occurring in the northern (Puma Hills, Eleven Mile Canyon) and western (Witcher Mountain, Cap Rock Ridge) portions of the unit. White-tailed deer occur at low densities along Four Mile Creek north of Canon City and along the Arkansas River corridor; most whitetail habitat is on private land. Elk are present throughout the unit and function primarily as a winter concentration and transition area rather than high-density summer range; elk move into the unit from adjacent high-country units in autumn and winter. Concentration areas include the western (Witcher Mountain, Cap Rock Ridge) and northeastern (Dome Rock SWA, Sheep Rock) portions. Archery and muzzleloader seasons see elk activity in the Pike National Forest block. Pronghorn inhabit the northwest portion of the unit, particularly on the South Park prairie north and south of Eleven Mile State Park; most pronghorn range is on private land. Black bear are present in the forested portions; the unit is grouped with GMUs 58, 59, 511, 512, and 591 for bear management. Wild turkey occur in the southern half of the unit in ponderosa pine and oakbrush habitat; Dome Rock SWA holds a noted turkey population. Waterfowl are available at Eleven Mile State Park early in the season. Small game includes cottontail rabbits throughout and dusky (blue) grouse at higher elevations in the Pike National Forest block.
