Unit 561, Colorado

Steep to moderately steep Sawatch Range mountains. Elevation ranges from approximately 7,036 feet near Salida at the northeastern corner to 13,961 feet on Mount Ouray (on the Chaffee/Saguache county line) near the Continental Divide. The Continental Divide runs the entire western boundary. Marshall Pass (10,846 ft, FS Road 243/CR 200) bisects the unit's interior. Glacially carved drainages, steep canyon walls, and broad alpine basins characterize the upper elevations; rolling foothills, brushy benches, and the South Arkansas River corridor define the lower eastern margins.

Primary highway access: US 50 forms the northern boundary (Monarch Pass at 11,312 ft, paved, year-round); US 285 forms the eastern boundary through Poncha Pass (9,010 ft, paved, year-round). Interior access: FS Road 243 / County Road 200 (Marshall Pass Road) is a well-graded dirt road that ascends from near Poncha Springs into the heart of the unit, reaching Marshall Pass at 10,846 ft; it is closed in winter. FS Road 203 (Poncha Creek Road) provides OHV/4WD access up the east side via Poncha Creek drainage. The Monarch Pass CDT/Continental Divide Trail trailhead (Monarch Crest) at US 50 provides non-motorized access along the western boundary. The Rainbow Trail (#1336) parallels the lower eastern portion. The managing agency is the Pike-San Isabel National Forest, Salida Ranger District (719-539-3591); the local CPW Area 13 Office in Salida is 719-530-5520. Land ownership: approximately 84% USFS, 6% BLM, 1% State Trust, 9% private. State Trust Lands include the 360-acre Poncha Pass parcel (GMU 561, open Sept 1–end of Feb, deer/elk/rabbit, foot or horseback only). No designated Wilderness exists within GMU 561. Seasonal road closures apply to FS roads above approximately 10,000 ft, typically November through May–June depending on snowpack.

Low elevations (7,000–8,500 ft) along the eastern margin support sagebrush, grassland, and grassy/brushy hillsides. Mid-elevations (8,500–10,500 ft) transition through oakbrush, aspen groves, ponderosa pine, and mixed montane conifer. The main mid-to-upper belt (9,500–11,500 ft) is dominated by spruce-fir forest with aspen parks. Timberline falls roughly at 11,500–12,000 ft, above which lie alpine tundra and talus extending to the summits. Riparian vegetation follows Poncha Creek, South Arkansas River tributaries, and smaller drainages. The eastern lowlands provide critical winter deer range.

Elk are present throughout the unit and are particularly concentrated in the western two-thirds up to timberline during summer and early fall; herds move to lower-elevation benches and south-facing slopes as snow accumulates in November. Mule deer concentrate in the lower elevations of the eastern unit, which serve as traditional winter range. Black bear range throughout all vegetation zones. Moose are present at very low population (GMUs 56 and 561 are combined for moose management). Mountain lion are present throughout. White-tailed deer are extremely scarce, occurring almost exclusively in the Arkansas River drainage on private land along the eastern boundary. Small game includes dusky (blue) grouse and snowshoe hare at mid-to-upper elevations, ptarmigan in the alpine zone, cottontail rabbits throughout lower elevations, and limited waterfowl along the South Arkansas River early in fall. Turkey has been reported in the unit (HuntScore) but populations are not well documented.
