Unit 50, Colorado

The South Park floor within the unit ranges from 8,800 to 10,000 feet — one of the highest broad valleys in North America. The Puma Hills run north-south along the unit's eastern edge, with Schoolmarm Mountain as the local high point; Mount Silverheels (13,822 ft) lies just north in adjacent unit 500. Terrain transitions from flat, open grassland on the valley floor to rolling hills, canyons, and moderately steep forested mountains along the eastern and northeastern margins.

The eastern portion lies within Pike National Forest (South Park Ranger District, office in Fairplay at CO-9 and US-285, phone 719-836-2031). Maintained Forest Service roads and primitive four-wheel-drive roads wind through the Puma Hills; many require foot travel to reach less-pressured terrain. The flat center of South Park is predominantly private ranch land, with some BLM parcels (Royal Gorge Field Office, Canon City) interspersed at lower elevations. State land board parcels exist but are not uniformly open to public hunting. No designated wilderness falls within GMU 50 proper; Buffalo Peaks Wilderness (43,410 acres) lies in adjacent GMUs 49/57/58 to the west; Lost Creek Wilderness (119,790 acres) is in neighboring GMUs 501/59 to the east/north. US-285 forms the northern and western boundary; US-24 forms the southern boundary; County Road 77 forms the eastern boundary near Lake George. Eleven Mile Canyon Recreation Area sits near the SE corner of the broader South Park area.

Vegetation is strongly elevation-driven. The South Park shortgrass steppe (8,800–10,000 ft) supports grasses, forbs, fringed sage, and rabbitbrush with remnant irrigated hay meadows. The montane zone carries ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, and aspen. The subalpine zone (9,000–11,500 ft) is dominated by Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, aspen, and bristlecone pine with open mesas. Above 11,500 ft, alpine tundra with sedges, forbs, and willows caps the northern ridgelines. Riparian corridors along the South Platte headwaters support narrowleaf cottonwood, willow, cinquefoil, and currant.

Mule deer occupy all elevations in summer, including above timberline in alpine willow, and migrate to lower elevations in units 50 and 501 by mid-October. Elk use all habitats seasonally; densities are low on the open park floor year-round but concentrate at higher calving and summer range. Most elk shift to lower-elevation winter range as snow accumulates. Radio-collar studies documented 200–700 elk immigrating annually from adjacent GMUs 37, 46, and 49 after rifle seasons, with wintering herds of 200–400 that occasionally aggregate above 1,000 animals briefly. Pronghorn occupy the high-elevation (9,000–10,000 ft) shortgrass steppe — the highest-elevation antelope herd in Colorado, numbering roughly 1,000–1,360 animals; the rut runs early September through mid-October. Shiras moose are present in low densities, concentrated along riparian willow corridors and subalpine drainages. Black bears roam the forested Puma Hills and adjacent National Forest terrain. Mountain lions are present throughout the forested zone.
