Unit 5, Colorado

Predominantly hilly and mountainous, with only minor flatlands near Slater Creek and the Little Snake River. Elevation ranges from approximately 6,300–6,538 feet in the western lowlands to about 10,300–10,839 feet along the Continental Divide on the eastern border. Hahns Peak (10,774 ft) and Bears Ears (10,577 ft northwest peak) are prominent summits. Terrain is generally moderate to moderately steep; about 80 percent of public land falls at or below moderate slope grades. The Continental Divide forms the unit's entire eastern boundary and separates GMU 5 from GMU 161.

Primary road access is via Routt County Road 129 (Elk River Road), which runs north from US Highway 40 near Steamboat Springs through Clark and into the heart of the unit toward the Wyoming border. Routt County Road 82 and Moffat County Road 1 form portions of the unit's western boundary. Forest Service Road 400 (Seedhouse Road / CR 64) branches east off CR 129 past Glen Eden and reaches the Slavonia and Seedhouse trailheads into Mount Zirkel Wilderness (no motorized vehicles inside the wilderness). Additional National Forest roads give hunters good access throughout the Routt NF portion. The Grieve Ranch Conservation Easement State Wildlife Area (2,511 acres, 6,582–9,000 ft, confirmed GMU 5) is open to public hunting and borders the BLM's Fly Creek Restricted Travel Area (12,000+ acres, motorized use limited to Fly Creek Road only). The western half below 8,000 feet is predominantly private ranchland with approximately three dozen scattered BLM parcels; public access there requires attention to ownership boundaries. Total unit area is approximately 191,204 acres: ~89,344 USFS, ~23,000 BLM, ~2,500 state, ~39% private. The Hahns Peak/Bears Ears Ranger District office in Steamboat Springs (970-870-2299) manages the National Forest portion. Hahns Peak Lake Campground (Routt NF) operates from Labor Day through mid-October. Snow and ice present seasonal hazards on forest and county roads; 4WD vehicles recommended. Nearest services: Baggs, Wyoming (~20 miles north), Steamboat Springs (~40 miles south, full services), Walden (~50 miles east).

Sagebrush flats and oakbrush (bitterbrush) dominate the lower western valleys and south-facing slopes below roughly 7,500 feet. Foothill zones transition through mountain shrub communities into aspen groves, which are widespread across mid-elevations. Ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine forests cover much of the mid-elevation terrain, giving way to Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir near the Continental Divide. Riparian corridors follow Slater Creek, the Little Snake River, and the Elk River tributaries. The western half features several large open parks and meadow openings interspersed with timber, while the eastern (National Forest) half is predominantly wooded with large alpine clearings.

Elk are the primary draw; a substantial herd ranges between Hahns Peak and the Little Snake River in the Routt NF. Elk generally summer at higher elevations in the forest and move to lower private lands and western lowlands as snow deepens in the third and fourth rifle seasons. Mule deer are present in good numbers throughout, favoring sagebrush and oakbrush foothills and aspen parks; they similarly push west and south into lower private ground during heavy snow years. Typical mature bucks run 4x4 at 22–24 inches. Pronghorn occupy the sagebrush flats and open valley floors on the western side of the unit. Black bear are numerous, particularly in the forested eastern half. Moose have been reported in riparian corridors and willow-heavy drainages. The Continental Divide corridor provides connectivity to adjacent wilderness units. Mountain lion present but not a listed managed hunt in GMU 5 CPW materials. No bighorn sheep or mountain goat hunts associated with this unit.
