Unit 201, Colorado

A high semi-arid plateau bisected by stream-cut canyons, ranging from approximately 5,400 feet at lower elevations to 9,559 feet at Middle Mountain; Diamond Mountain (the prominent high point at roughly 9,700 feet) dominates the upper country. Prominent features include Cold Springs Mountain, Douglas Mountain, Lone Mountain, Lodore Canyon, Lookout Mountain, Sandwash Basin, and the Vermillion Bluffs. The Green River and Yampa River cut deep canyons into the plateau. Upper elevations — particularly south-facing slopes of Diamond Mountain and Middle Mountain — are described as rough, rocky, and rugged. Road conditions on mountain-top routes are extremely rough; 4WD or side-by-side is recommended and some routes require 45 minutes to travel 2 miles.

Primary land management is BLM Little Snake Field Office (Craig, CO), which administers approximately 71% of GMU 201. Colorado State Land Board (Cold Springs Mountain State Trust Land) adds approximately 14% of GMU 201 and is open to hunting Aug 1–Dec 31 with a valid hunting license (age 16+); access via Maybell → Hwy 318 northwest 41 miles to CR 10N, then north 8 miles. Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge (12,150 acres, approximately 19 mi²) lies along the Green River corridor on the south unit boundary. Private land is minimal (~8%, roughly 19 mi²) but checkerboard awareness is advised. CR 167 and BLM Road 2007 are the primary improved routes into the Cold Springs Mountain / Diamond Mountain area; 4WD recommended. A Wilderness Study Area within the unit is closed to motorized vehicle travel. The nearest supply point is Rangely (~30 miles south; fuel, lodging, groceries); nearest major airport is Yampa Valley Regional (Hayden, CO), approximately 1.5 hours away. No formal developed trailheads — access is via dispersed BLM and State Land Board roads. The Hiawatha and Powder Wash oil and gas fields in the northeast portion add some improved roads but also represent active industrial activity.

Dominant cover type is sagebrush steppe (approximately 53% of GMU 201), followed by pinyon-juniper woodland (roughly 25%), concentrated on south-facing slopes and lower north-facing slopes. Mountain shrub communities (bitterbrush, curlleaf mountain mahogany) cover roughly 4%. Aspen stands with grass-forb understories occupy approximately 3% on protected north-facing slopes at higher elevations. Salt-desert shrub (shadscale, greasewood) covers about 7% and dominates the lower arid northeast portions. Riparian corridors along the Green River, Yampa River, and associated drainages are lined with cottonwood, boxelder, and willows (~2%) and support the greatest wildlife diversity. Mixed conifer and lodgepole pine cover roughly 1-2% each on protected high-elevation aspects. Spruce-fir patches on north-facing slopes provide thermal and security cover for elk. Invasive cheatgrass is present at lower elevations.

Elk: GMU 201 is part of DAU E-1 (Cold Springs Elk Herd), managed for trophy-quality bull elk with a post-hunt sex-ratio objective of greater than 40 bulls per 100 cows; observed ratios from the CPW management plan averaged 71 bulls per 100 cows (more recent GoHunt data suggests ratios as high as 95 bulls per 100 cows). A small resident desert elk group uses GMU 201 year-round at lower elevations; the larger migratory component moves onto summer range on Cold Springs Mountain, Diamond Mountain, and Middle Mountain (above 7,000 ft) and descends to lower sagebrush-pinyon-juniper winter range as snow drives them down, typically during or after 3rd rifle season. Significant interstate elk movement across the Wyoming and Utah borders is documented; elk also seek refuge in Dinosaur National Monument to the south during hunting pressure. Mule deer: scattered throughout the unit; bucks averaging 24–26 inches are considered good for this area; some deer migrate to lower elevations during 3rd season. CWD has been reported in northwest Colorado mule deer populations — hunters should check current CPW CWD mapping for GMU 201 status and submit harvested heads for testing. Pronghorn: present primarily in lower sagebrush and salt-desert habitats; all licenses are draw. Moose: willow-lined stream corridors along the Green River and associated drainages provide habitat; very limited licenses issued. Black bear: present throughout the unit with limited draw licenses. Mountain lion: resident predator present throughout the unit.
