Unit 134, Colorado

Flat to gently rolling shortgrass prairie with irregular plateaus and steep-walled canyons. Elevations range from approximately 4,798 feet along the lower drainages to 6,450 feet on the higher plateaus. Notable landforms include Tyrone Flats, Tyler Hills, East Draw, and Juan Baca Canyon. Four-wheel drive is advisable on county roads, which become impassable in wet weather.

Interstate 25 forms the western boundary and US Highway 350 the southern boundary; the northern boundary follows the Apishapa River. Approximately 92% of the unit is private land (HuntScore mapped data; CPW unit description characterizes the unit as 'approximately 99% private'). Public land consists of: (1) a portion of Apishapa State Wildlife Area (7,935 acres total, spanning GMUs 133 and 134) — entry requires a valid hunting or fishing license or an SWA pass (anyone 16+); the SWA is open Aug. 16–May 31; bighorn sheep are present on the SWA; the portion within GMU 134 requires crossing Apishapa Canyon and is considered difficult to access; and (2) a small BLM tract of approximately 500 acres north of Hoehne on County Road 83. Dominated by shortgrass prairie (blue grama and buffalo grass) across open flats, transitioning to pinyon-juniper woodlands on hills, mesas, and canyon rims. Riparian corridors along the Apishapa River and Purgatoire River support cottonwood and other lowland vegetation. Yucca, cactus, and sand sage occur on drier sites. Some farmland (row crops) persists in the northern flats.

Mule deer are present along the Apishapa River and in the southern reaches near the Purgatoire River, though the southern Purgatoire drainage is entirely private. Whitetail deer also occur along riparian corridors. Elk are found in the pinyon-juniper canyon areas; the unit holds a modest plains elk population that uses canyon refugia and disperses onto adjacent private grasslands. Pronghorn occupy the northern three-fourths of the unit year-round on open shortgrass prairie and sage flats. Bighorn sheep are documented at the Apishapa SWA within the unit. Mountain lion presence is documented as part of the larger southeast Colorado population. Scaled quail, wild turkey (limited, mostly along Purgatoire), and cottontail rabbit are present. No moose is documented within this unit.
