Unit 8, Arizona

The unit spans a dramatic elevation gradient from approximately 3,600 feet along the Verde River drainage in the south to 9,256 feet at the summit of Bill Williams Mountain. The western extent of the Mogollon Rim cuts diagonally across the southwest section, creating a sharp escarpment. The terrain is otherwise relatively level plateau country broken by numerous small knolls (Garland Prairie, McDougal Flat, Barney Flat, Round Mountain, Summit Mountain, McCracken Knoll, Jackass Knoll, Dutchkid Knoll, Boyd Knoll, Snyder Knoll) and deep canyon systems including Sycamore Canyon (approximately 20 miles long, up to 7 miles rim-to-rim), Tule, Government, MC, and Hell Canyons. Lower elevations range 3,600–5,500 feet; high country above 6,000 feet.

The unit is administered almost entirely (~95 percent) by the Kaibab National Forest, Williams Ranger District (800 S. 6th Street, Williams, AZ 86046; 928-635-8200). Interstate 40 traverses the unit east-west; State Highway 64 extends north toward the Grand Canyon South Rim; US Highway 180 runs along the northern edge. The nearest full-service town is Williams (lodging, fuel, groceries). Ash Fork lies to the west along I-40. Primary dirt access via Forest Service Roads 12, 105, 108, 110, 122, 139, 140, 141, 181, and 354. Two-wheel-drive access is generally adequate in dry conditions; wet weather may require four-wheel drive. ATVs are restricted to designated roads. Sycamore Canyon Wilderness (established 1935) lies along the eastern boundary and prohibits motorized vehicle entry. Forest Service campgrounds include White Horse Lake and Dogtown Reservoir. Small pockets of state and private land exist within the unit boundary; no tribal or military land.

Vegetation transitions by elevation. Below roughly 5,500 feet, the landscape shifts from grassland and sagebrush flats (Garland Prairie, Wagon Tire Flat, McDougal Flat) through open pinyon-juniper woodland. From approximately 5,500 to 7,500 feet, ponderosa pine with scattered Gambel oak is dominant. Bill Williams Mountain supports a mixed-conifer cap of spruce, fir, and aspen above 7,500 feet. Riparian corridor vegetation follows Sycamore Creek and the Verde River along the southern boundary. Man-made water catchments, stock tanks, and wildlife waters are distributed throughout the unit.

Elk are present throughout the unit above 6,000 feet, with concentrations at Garland Prairie, McDougal Flat, Barney Flat, Round Mountain, and Summit Mountain during early archery and muzzleloader seasons; bulls move to lower canyons after significant snowfall. The rut typically peaks mid-to-late September. Mule deer range across all elevations, with higher concentrations near acorn-producing Gambel oak at elevation and lower canyon edges near the Verde River. Coues white-tailed deer occur at isolated low densities in rugged canyon terrain between 5,000 and 6,500 feet near Bill Williams Mountain and Dutchkid Knoll; the unit is not a recognized Coues deer destination. Pronghorn occupy the unit's open grassland flats; concentrations at Garland Prairie (northeast portion) and Wagon Tire Flat, with secondary use of Hat Ranch, Putney Flat, Sunflower Flat, and Page Flat. Black bear and mountain lion are present above 5,000 feet in canyon drainages and areas with fruit-bearing shrubs. Merriam's turkey inhabit high-country areas near stock waters at Barney Flats, Pine Flats, Cougar Park, and Bill Williams Mountain. Javelina occupy lower elevation canyon edges and transition zones, particularly Bear, MC, and Government Canyons.
