Hunting notes

Calling (cow calls and antler raking) is the dominant tactic due to flat, vegetated terrain with few vantage points. Hunt willow and alder drainages and lake shores. September rut (peak ~Sept 20–30) is prime time. Boat/float hunting the Skwentna-Yentna river system allows hunters to cover ground and access remote oxbows. Patience is critical — bulls can be slow to respond to calls. Expect very wet conditions; hip boots mandatory.

Willow and alder thickets line all river and stream drainages and are prime moose forage. Horsetail and aquatic vegetation in shallow lakes and beaver ponds. Terrain is wet throughout the summer; hip boots or waders are essential. Shoulder seasons (late Aug–Sept) see lush vegetation that can conceal moose at short range.
